I have been invited to visit a well known blacksmith's workshop in Japan. I'm sure many of you have done the same and I would appreciate tips that are beyond the tourist culture books.
I was thinking of making a primitive Bowie for him but I don't know if he would like this style.

I can be reached on this thread or via my e-mail on my web.

Thanks-

Dean, have a great time, I think he would like the bowie very much! Take MaNY pictures of his equipment if possible!

...maybe figure out the rules first, is he allowed to have a bowie?
length limits, import restrictions on woods or whatever...
It would be a real shame to have it taken from you at customs in the airport.

There are hundreds of US teachers in Japan to teach English. Try contacting an agency that teaches ESL English in japan and get in contact with an American who is living there now for the interesting info.

I knew someone who lived there for a while and the differences are sometimes completely unpredictable.

If he is Old school......take lots of Respect, patience, a willingness to listen.......
and RESPECT...!

I would take what you enjoy making and do well, if thats a bowie then a Bowie you should take. I doubt he would want an asian inspired knife if thats what he primarily makes.
After thinking about it I think a Bowie would be perfect, alittle piece of ol Americana.
PS Yea what Russ said is so true, I lived in Japan for three years. Have big eyes and a little mouth. Its real easy to offend yourself or your host if your not careful.
