Visiting the States - what knife to buy?

Freezer, I would try to decide on which type of steel that you want first, and go from there. That will probably be a much more limiting factor in decided which companies and possibly patterns are available. My favorite pattern is a canoe. Plenty of knife for the money. My second choice is a congress.

Walking Man, I agree, but to be honest, I'm not over fussy. I prefer a decent Carbon over poor Stainless. 1095 or Case CV seem to be the favourites around here, although I've never owned a knife with either, that I know of.
D2 sounds interesting but I'm not sure that my sharpening skills are up to it. :o
Having looked around a few of the makers' sites now, I'm leaning towards a Whittler, Stockman or Congress in that order. Somehow a barlow style doesn't appeal as much.
To be honest, if I can find a good, American made knife (Has to be that for it to be a souvenir of our Stateside trip!) with the right 'feel' to it, I'll be happy. :)
I've never carried a 'blade only' knife before, and am very curious to see how I find it, especially as I almost never EDC more than one knife at a time.

A small Case Stockman with a nice bone handle would be my suggestion. That 3" rule doesn't leave you much to go with otherwise I'd say go with another classic in the Buck 110 2 dot from the 70's.

Thanks guys. RDomina, do you know if they sell direct, or where their outlet is? Canal Street look like very nice knives. :)

I don't know what others think, but as far as D2 goes, on a slipjoint it should still be pretty easy to sharpen, because of the thickness of the blade. When you get into the more tactical and utility knives, where the knives are thick are usually more difficult.

Stop at a Walmart and pick up a Buck 110 for $32. Coming to America and not buying a 110 is like going to Paris and not having a glass of wine.

Knife prices over the internet in the USA are very cheap in contrast to UK prices. If you buy from the same internet shops and have them shipped to the UK, your hit with very high shipping costs, import taxes and VAT. Pick out a few good knives and have them shipped to your friend's house and take them home in your checked luggage. Trust me you'll be the envy of all your friends at BBF.

Now I like going to a knife shop as much as the next person, but if I was visiting from the UK, I'd try and visit a pistol range. Ask your friend to try to find a local range. If he doesn't have a gun, most ranges have rental handguns for a few dollars plus the cost of ammo and targets.

have a great trip

Thanks RDomina. I found some contact details for them on the web (should have just looked for myself, sorry to be lazy), sent them an e-mail, and they were very helpful, sending me links to a website that carries their line: www.cumberlandknifeworks.com and a load of info on themselves. :)

Godot, I'll certainly take a look at a Buck 110. And I love the shooting idea, but sadly my wife and her parents (who we're meeting up with for the week) are very anti-gun. I can't even keep my air rifles in the house! While they don't stop me from shooting, it really wouldn't be appreciated if I dissapeared for a bit to a range. :grumpy:
Interesting idea re. the internet retailers. Are there any with a particularly good reputation please?
