Visitor Message Spam?

I noticed in the December plank log that a couple of people were banned for "visitor message spam". I understand spam, but what is visitor message spam?

When they (the dummies) post spam in visitor messages.
Example: someone sends you a visitor message complete with links advertising their knock off purses, sunglasses, team clothing, or other junk we can not live a full life without. .

Spammers who signed up to spam the forums but incompetently spammed visitor message boxes instead.
