Looking to upgrade your computer this holiday season? Don't, not if it means a Vista operating system.

There simply is no advantage over XP and it is noticeably slower - even with three times the computing power of my previous machine.

Listen to me now and hear me later - don't do it.

I've had my new system for over 5 months now and I regret my decision more every day. My only hope is the introduction of a service pack sometime next year.

Consider this the best computer advice you will get this holiday season.

I think your problem is that you are mixing new, Vista, with old XP. That seems to be the difficulty people have .Buy a new Vista machine , get other software etc designed for Vista and you'll be better off ! My Vista ,Home Premium, has a good security system but some bells and whistles I have no use for.First major upgrade is supposed to be early next year.

There are a number of sites now showing that running software in Vista is slower than XP. This is with games and hardware that support both OSes and other pure testing suites.

Vista adds a ton of overhead processing for DRM crap and other so-called security that's vendor oriented, not user oriented.

Further, Vista has poor file handling, particularly with large files compared to XP. SP1 includes fixes for that, but this is another sign of the bad design of Vista

I just read an article that says that when service pack 3 comes out for XP and service pack 1 comes out for Vista, XP will run about twice as fast as Vista. If I get a new computer now I will have to "downgrade" it and get XP.

I use Vista on my work computer.

I'm sure a lot of you work in the tech field , ask your co-workers , buddies , competetors , I'll bet ya lunch they all will say the same thing.

Vista is horrid. Every work day I tell myself I have to go back to XP , and I will , it's just a matter of taking the time to do it.
IMO there is nothing , good about Vista , my PC is more than powerful enough to run it with ease so speed is not an issue , I just flat out do not like it at all.
It is convoluted and sticky.
Took me an hour to find Vista freeware to burn CD's , that actually worked without some wierd hitch.

IMO Vista is going to be a very expensive ( for Microsoft) abortion like Windows ME.

Vista sUXxors!

I have a new Dell laptop, dual core, 1GB Ram etc, etc, etc. running Vista. Sitting next to it at work is a three-year-old Dell 256 MB Ram 1.6G processor running XP Pro. The XP machine wins hands-down for EVERYTHING: boot time, access time, games, video, shutdown time, etc. I keep threatening to back-install XP, but that'd mean a month of tweaking to get it right again and I just don't have time.

Yeah Vista bites big time. Less stable, not compatible with a very large amount of older software. I don't recall ever having as many backwards compatibility issues in any of my previous jumps across window's software except for Windows 2000.

I have $800 software packages that refuse to cooperate. The software company is offering a VISTA version but requires an upgrade not a patch - so spending $200 will give me the same product with a transparent title bar and screwed up menus. Thanks!

I have to believe that Microsoft is back to its old tricksies of putting out a garbage, buggy product all in the interest of stimulating (more like forcing) product turnover.
Hold onto XP as long as you can - but really that is likely as long as the first hard drive crash you encounter.

Agreed... Vista sucks. I bought a new laptop a few months ago - that abortion Vista was installed.

I need to back rev it to XP but just haven't taken the time. Microsoft bastids!

Ya know folks , there is hope.

The sheer number of folks who dislike Vista is incredible , go look at some of the guru forums and Vista is getting nothing but bad press.
Any good press is coming from the big companies who are trying desperatly to get people to like and use Vista but it just is not working too well, maybe Vista should have waited another 5 years.
Plenty of folks are deserting Microsoft for Linux and Mac OS. Even more are returning to , or sticking with XP.

I hear a few comparisons to when XP came out but this is way different.

I'm hoping/thinking Vista just might go the way of ME, ignored , unloved and unwanted.

Oh and get this , I got tired of the few theme XP came with so I'm using a program called Windowblinds which turns my theme into any theme I want , presently my theme is Arzo , dark and tech looking.

We dont need no stinking Vista !! :D

From what I hear I'm glad that I've found happiness with Mac OS (I can't get over how much I love it, and I used to trash on Macs all the time just for fun because I thought they were for idiots). In all fairness, a lot of the Vista problems have to do with 3rd party software/hardware. I still like to have a PC with Windows just because everyone has software and hardware for them, but that is their greatest advantage and their greatest weakness- they can't code for everything, so that's why Windows is generally less reliable than Linux or Mac OS, which are compatible with much less. I'm sure the gap is a lot smaller with ALL new peripherals meant for Vista, so I know that in a sense, comparing these mix and match Vista systems to my 2007 Macbook with Mac OS X and all Mac OS X software is unfair. Then again, Windows itself is, in my opinion, not as well-designed as Mac OS, so compatibility was its only saving grace.

Microsoft needs to smarten up because with the iWork office suite, Apple's death grip on portable music, and the fact that Macs are now #3, they're going to be losing market share and pronto. They can't keep coming out with poor Apple imitations months after Apple puts out new technology. They have to take a risk and get ahead of the game.

The new service pack for XP has been announced, and it's supposed to increase the performance of XP. Seems like the worst time to buy Vista.

But unfortunately most people buy storebought computers and don't get a choice of OSes. I have seen some interesting behavior from computer makers though - buy a computer with XP and get a free Vista upgrade when you're ready - Dell is offering a Vista or XP choice on some machines - and some companies are offering free "upgrades" from Vista back to XP.

I'm ordering parts tonight for a friend's new machine, and I'm certainly ordering XP!

All this makes me happy that when I had my new laptop built for me recently I specifically asked to have XP Pro installed rather than Vista. I've been very happy with the speed and performance and don't regret skipping the headaches.

We were advised in my Database Management class to avoid Windows Vista for at least two years. Apparently, it's not uncommon for it to take that long to work out all of the bugs in a new system & Visat seems to have plenty. Not saying it's a bad thing, just that many products are rushed onto the shelves before they're perfected. YMMV.

Can you explain what the problem with ME is/was? I thought ME was just an upgrade of Windows 98. I'm still running it and it seems to work well enough for what my family uses the computer for. Granted I had a old hand me down with Win 3.1 on it before I bought my current computer in Aug 2001.

Seems so long ago hehe.

Before ME came out there was a lot of buzz like it was going to be a big show, and when was released it turned out to be nothing big at all , most of the folks I know stuck with 98SE, as I did until XP was released.

Win 3.1? Ahh, that brings back some memories, I've installed WFWG 3.11 on a pII laptop with 64 mb of memory, and man does that OS fly with that much memory and processor power!

WinME's biggest fault IMO is the "Restore" feature, that almost never works, I've got a laptop running ME upgrade and it runs fin, but "Restore's" price is that it is a bear trying to go into Dos to run things like Scanreg/fix or Scanreg/restore.

Vista by all accounts is a dud, bloated, and it seems to be designed to obsolesce an entire generation of peripherals, like printers and scanners etc.

It offers no benefit that I know of, so why bother with it?

You are correct, as I understand it. ME was really just 98SE with a ton of extras tacked on. Sometimes those extras worked, and sometimes not. Generally speaking, ME crashed more and ran slower than 98SE. It could be made relatively stable though by removing and turning off a bunch of junk, and there used to be a popular website that had instructions for doing that.

I am an MS employee. I use a Mac. I'll be buying an iMac (mostly for my wife) in the new year.

I'm not going to give any explicit advice, but... :D
