Vol. II, Malaysian Khukuris and more.

Now this is great! I dare anyon to show me another forum( let alone a knife forum ) that disscusus khukuri, kimchee, paprica, coconuts, curry, bardelos, tebetan resterants, rebel strongholds, and coconut picking monkeys all in the same forum. Thats what I like about this place you never know what you are going to find but it is always educational and interesting . Keep it up.

I'm planning on a trip trip through Malaysia late December. What's the knife laws there like, anyone know?

Maybe I can pickup a few machetes.

goat.
Leave any of your snap-knife and dagger behind! It is illegal to bring those type of cutlery into Malaysia (What a weird regulation!).
  • Don't miss PASAR SENI (Arts Market) at Kuala Lumpur - you can buy Malay Keris there.
  • Kuala Kangsar which is about 100 km from Kuala Lumpur is famous for PARANG and GOLOK (Malaysian version of machette).
  • During your stay in Kuala Lumpur you can taste good curry from Indian Restaurants - just ask hotel receptionist the location of Nasi Kandar Restaurant - Binggo! Malay taste, Chinese taste, Indian taste and Western taste is always available around Kuala Lumpur!
BTW - December will be Muslim fasting month this year - at about 5:00 pm daily you can buy various types of Malay foods from five foot way food stalls - you won't see Malays doing any eating business during daytime!

Wanna hear something funny?
We get our Curry powder at an Oriental market that is wonderful.
They have some of the best seafood in town.Thier blue and stone crabs are usually trying to crawl over one another to get out of the box thier in.
They carry everything!!! I got a beautiful Mortar and Pestle made from Granite there for very cheap.

The funny thing is I just checked out the Curry can and of all places it comes from .... Malaysia.

Khukuri FAQ

A good day to be alive, a good day to die, a good day to laugh and weep.

Malaysian Curry - ROFLMAO
( recommended by a Cherokee yet! )

Reminds me of one of my wife's friends who was a teacher. Looked like crazy for another job, anywhere, just none to be found. I left a note on her door, telling her she had a job interview the next day. With Mother Teresa. Two weeks later she called to tell my wife she'd taken a job on the McDermitt reservation and to tell me I had the "wrong indians".

Pakcik Bill, Yvsa, Rusty, Goat, forumites.

One of the best thing happened to me in 1999 is to know you all!

I just want to add another funny surprise ...
  • Curry is an Indian food.
  • It is now recomended by a Cherokee (Yvsa) as mentioned by Rusty!
  • The one recommended was imported from Malaysia.
  • I guess it is made by a Malaysian Chinese Curry Factory! I recognise the name of the factory as belong to Chinese.
  • The workers of that Curry Factory are Malays!
Insyaa-Allaah! I'll ask my wife how to prepare curry according to Malay style, it is slightly different from Indian recipe ... if you like I'll post it for you here! Where does Khukuri take part in that curry preparation? I guess you can cut meat using CBKC Khukuri ... please do not slice tomatoes using your Super Salyan! nyah ... nyah ... nyah! BTW - Yvsa, keep aside your Keris - it is not funtional at all in preparing curry! another nyah ... nyah ... nyah!

Maybe I'm just a carrier! Not (quite) crazy myself, but I pass it along to ( infect )others. You guys are coconuts, and cracked ones at that.

PS: Mohd, thanks for writing back. Will write you when I can give that response my full attention.

Rusty,

with regards to mail ordering spices I recommend Penzeys they have pretty much everything you could want (well except for that algerian cooking oil I wanted, or maybe that was that I wanted it because they didnt have it...) my ex-gf used to mix and grind all her spices and made some of the best curry I have ever had and used to order all her spices from them they have some odd ones, charnusk, galangal, etc...for people like me who currently are impressed with their culinary ambition when we actually heat the can of soup up they also have some really good premade curry mixes.

crow

oops forgot to mention they have a website, dont remember the url but probably something like www.penzeys.com

yvsa, rusty, all.

I asked my wife to write down the traditional malay curry recipe - I got it! The only problem is that I have to translate it to English (I,m not familiar with various names of spices in English & some of the herbs are only found locally in Malaysia - so I'll check with my office colleage about the western herbs to replace the local herbs!).

For the time being - please choose your curry recipies from the following URL - you can find varieties of curry recipies such as Beef Curry, Fish Head Curry, Malay Curry, Thai Curry etc.
