A friend's son is graduating from his basic training in the Marine Corp next week. He's a good kid, a real go-getter, and wants to go into recon. He's just tough enough that I think he'll be accepted. I'm going to give him a khukuri when he comes home next week, and I can't decide between a 15" villager Sirupati, and a Sgt. Khadka 15" BAS. Both are tough as nails. I tested them both pretty hard to be sure they'd hold up. I was only thinking of the Siru at first, 'cause I know how Sarge likes them, but this chiruwa BAS with Rosewood scales would make a pretty impressive gift. It's really tough too, cutting some old dried oak with absolutely no effect on the blade.

So guys, help me decide. Which one would you give?
Edit: Weight on Sirupati with scabbard is 1 lb 7 oz. BAS is 1 lb 15 oz.

These are nice knives, but I would opt for the Sirupati. It has to be lighter, and it will do anything that needs to be done.

The pretty rosewood may not be the most comfortable if the wood shrinks in the desert. I assume that the finish on both will be pretty good, but I still think that lighter is better.

I have seen videos of the marines in action. It looks like that carry a LOT of weight on their backs. The rosewood is pretty, but I would rather pack a sirupati.

Tough choice, not much jungle or woods to cut through, but the H2H is not much of an issue (as I understand it). This young man being young and tough the additional wieght of the BAS versus the Sirupati isn't an issue.
My thought is the size, shape and reputation of the BAS tips the scales in it's favor, IMHO.

Let him take his pick. they both are very nice.
I'd like to belief either could save a life. The marine might be able to see what is best for him.

I would also pick the Sirupati, having the blade be in the villager finish will help him get past using it since no one wants to mess up that pretty mirror finish. :p Plus the lower weight of the Sirupati will be nice.

Sirupati, although I don't know why exactly. Just looks right for a young jar...er, Marine. ;)
Which ever you choose, I'm sure he will receive it with pride, and I hope he will carry it with honor.

I vote for the unbreakable Chiruwa BAS. It is more like the AK's that I favor.

He might actually get more use out of a 12" PK which will fit on or in a pack and more likly be with him than a big knife. Super all round utility knife.

Good idea Steve. But the only 12" knives I have are a siru and an AK. The handles on those are pretty small, and he's a good sized boy. Hmmm. I do have a 13.5" Balance by Kumar though. Well shoot, it's got a small handle too.

I would think he would be more interested in the fighting aspect of the blade even if he does not have to use it so the Sirupate its faster.

I voted for the BAS by Sgt Khadka. Here are a couple of my reasons:

1. I have a BAS by the good Sgt. Its phenomenal. Easily my best fit and finish. I tested the acessory knives and they are hardened. The blade is masterfully done too. All around my favorite rig to drool over, and I haven't modded a thing.

But most importantly:

2. Because I've done a search for my friend Sylvrfalcn's posts during his time in Afghanistan, and this is the knife he used. If you haven't read the posts you should, they are great reading. The BAS got rated highly by a knife opinion I really respect, and generally "One Hell of an American."

i'd recommend the BAS too, not only because i covet a chiruwa one and would selfishly suggest you sent the other and the BAS to me ;) that BAS should prove itself sell, and versatile to boot.

i'd send him a sharpening stick as well, and maybe a big handful of ranger bands, ready to go, to protect his sheath and "dull it up", plus two altoids cans to put things in, and perhaps a tube like "aireborne" cold tabs come in (sealable), and perhaps some survival goodies too - he can then assemble a overall rig; heck, i might suggest a puuko too or other tools. hard to say what, but the ranger bands, definitely. they're probably by themselves, worth gold there with the boys - send along a crate of bicycle tubes even :>

I'd have to say the Sirupati as well Steve and maybe one of those sheaths from Blackjack. I just got two today, one for myself and one for my Marine buddy in Iraq. I'm sending him a Sirupati very similar to yours in my next care package along with toys for the Iraqi Children.

Congrats, Semper FI and God's speed to your friend's son!

Ounces become pounds and pounds become pain. I'd vote for the Siru or just let him pick. He may not actually use it at work though, the issued OKC3S is actually a pretty good knife.

In general, the BAS is more useful, but if there's any chance he'll actually get to
pack it, the Sirupati.

As someone else said, those ounces add up. I remember stepping on a scale before heading out on my MORTAP, and I weighed over 100 lbs more than usual.

John, used to carry an 18" Chitlangi to the field...especially when we rode!

I'd vote for the Sgt. Khadka 15" BAS. It might be heavier but if the handle breaks, he can still use the Khuk by wrapping it with duct tape. It will be hard to wrap duct tape around a rat tailed tang to make a usefull handle. I second the idea of picking up a blackjack sheath for it. I still would let him pick.

OOh Rah Steve! A Great gesture. Always glad to hear a fellow Marine is thinking of going Recon.

I would vote for the Sirupati - tell him to keep in mind that the ability to carry a knife like this comfortably (and silently) is important...meaning he would probably want to get a custom Kydex sheath for it.

Let us know the outcome.
