Is this the only knife that he is going to be carrying ?
Which is the easiest to sharpen ?
Where is he likely to be deployed ?
H2H or NOT ?

Interesting dilemma Steve !!!

I'm going along with the siru crowd on this one for the said reasons. Currently, I am finding myself to be more and more of a "lighter/thinner is better" kind of guy. I think a siru would do anything and everything that this fine young guy would need. It's still going to be multiple times thicker and tougher than a kabar, and properly treated, the handle should hold up just fine.
Does anyone have any experience with dipping a handle in that rubberized "plasti-dip" stuff? I would think that a) it would protect the handle from cracking. b) dull it down enough not to catcht the eye c) protect the beatiful finish long enough to make it back state side and refinish the wood for a suiting "war trophy".
Also, the village siru would look pretty sharp with a subdued handle and a rubbed satin or blued finish on the blade.
I also think that a kydex sheath with a sharpening rod or stone would be of great service. However, these are just my personal very civilian ideas.

I voted for the BAS. Overall, it seems more useful to me both from a size/weight/shape standpoint and a durability standpoint.

Again,

It just all comes down to whether he'll actually be allowed to keep it while marching. That's the deciding factor.

I would think he would be more interested in the fighting aspect of the blade even if he does not have to use it so the Sirupate its faster.

Hi Azis:
I found your post interesting. I thought about a GI needing a utilitarian blade suited for camp type duty.

I never gave a thought to one of out military in Iraq ever getting into hand-to-hand combat and weilding a sirupate. Don't think it has or will happen(with any knife). We haven't been over-run there, yet. I feel any close quarters combat would be with small arms. Not even a fixed bayonet seems likely.

Yep, it's happened Steve. With a long Sirupati IIRC. It was told about here some time ago.

Yvsa,

Can you help us find that thread please? I tried a couple of searches, but without the poster's username I came up empty. Anybody else remember that thread? It sounds like a great read.

IIRC, there has been one known case of an Allied soldier, out of ammo, who successfully defeated (3?) insurgents with a knife.

Andy,

Is one thread about it, but the link to the news article is no longer valid. Unfortunately, I don't have time to do a longer search right now.

Basically, it comes down to this: unless the stats have changed, only 12% of casualties on the enemy are inflicted with small arms (rifle, MG) fire. The chances of using a knife in combat are incredibly small. What soldiers need are knives useful for daily tasks.

When I was in last time, since I was a mortarman, there were indeed times when we needed a long blade (a machete was supposed to be part of our team gear), so we could chop lanes to sight in our mortars.

Personally, I plan on taking the knife Shane Justice so kindly made for me. Hopefully, I'll have a chance to get a kydex sheath and get my name engraved on the butt to reduce the chance of having it stolen.

Andy I would prefer the gentleman who posted it long ago remark on it if he sees the reference.
It's not really my place to comment and I probably shouldn't have said anything to begin with.:( :o

The example that Yvsa is referring to, I think, involved a Marine participating in the clearing of a cave complex in Afghanistan. The Marine had a close encounter with a Taliban dude, involving a weapon that misfired (Taliban), a cheezy, by our standards, combat knife (Taliban), and a rather large Sirupati (Marine). The Marine didn't kill the Taliban dude, didn't need to, the couple of whacks he gave him with the Siru went right down to the bone and caused Mr. Taliban to reconsider his options.;)

No problems Yvsa I don't want anyone to do anything they are uncomfortable with. Thanks guys. I'll read some more.

Odd.. the vote tally favors the BAS but the consensus here seems to be decidedly in favor of the sirupati.
It doesn't seem possible that some members might just vote 'early and often' as they say here in Chicago. Nah....

I would vote for the Sirupati. I got an 18 " Siru that's great good to use on wood and possible in combat if it came to that. The villager finish is a plus too.

I assumed that one voted by posting a message.
If this is wrong, then cue me in.
