I'm on the fence about picking up a xl voyager
But am wondering if maybe these knives are a little to big? Possibly overkill? I've never seen one in person
So wondering what u guys that own one think
I live in the great state of Arizona so laws are not a factor, I normally carry a firearm and a pocket folder
I guess this is kind of a novelty impulse buy, im wanting one of these or a code 4
Thanks for your input everyone , I'm new to the forum but not to knives.

I have no problem with big knives but I don't think I've carried my old style Voyager XL out of the house more than 5 times in as many years. It is embarrassingly large. ;)

Yes, I kind of Imagined it being sized similar to one of those folding type
Landscaping saws :)
I may still end up buying one just to have it but don't know i it will see it's way into daily rotation
I typically carry a full sized benchmade barrage at work

Do it! I love mine, I just don't carry it... LOL

I usually carry a 4.5 in fixed blade these days, and very frequently carry the Spyderco Military or Queen Folding Hunter, both are "bigger" knives, so I'm really not "knife shy". I just feel silly sometimes unfolding that monster. :D

When I first moved to New Jersey, I used to walk down an old trail through the trees to a lake. The trail was narrow and thornbushes and tree branches grew out over it. I took my Vaquero Grande with me -- like a 6" Voyager with a recurved blade and serrations. It was amazing as a light machete for clearing the trail. After a couple of summers here, I really made way for the kids on bicycles. :)

One day, I was clearing a side trail where a gigantic thornbush had taken over, leaving hardly room to squeeze through. As I finished up, a little girl coming home from school saw me standing there with that huge folder, and all the thorn branches chopped off. She gave me a big smile and ran on home.

At one point I got a 6" Voyager and tried it instead of the Vaquero. The Voyager's hollow grind chipped out right away, the flat ground Vaquero is still going strong years later.

Been carrying my XL since July when laws changed here to allow it. Switched from the 4" one which I had carried for a good while before.

Carry it in back right pocket (non wallet one) and it rides along outside corner, so has been just fine, comfy when sitting and everything. I've grown as used to it as the previous 4" Voyager.

I hacked some good size limbs with mine not long ago. The flat grind of the current model is definitely an improvement for more brutal work, edge held up fine.

[/IMG]If you want big look for an X2 voyager or Vaquero Grande. Here's my X2 compared to a Millitary.

I used to carry an XL Voyager years ago before I started making. I loved it. I used it for trimming light vegetation and such but did not have the chipping issue like Esav. Mine does have a couple waves in the edge from abusive cutting. It was a great all around knife.
I had an X2 as well and carried it as well. It was too big, sometimes. It would only fit in the pockets of certain pants, other than that I would have carried it more.

Yeah the x2 is almost embarrassing to use in front of people. I usually carry it in my back pocket or cargo pocket. Not an edc for me but it's doable.

I wish there was a size between the L and Xl. Around a 4.5 to 4.75 inch blade would be awesome. The Xl is just a tad too big for me. With that being said, I don't think these were made for EDC type tasks.

I know it's a bit different than the Voyager, but the Spartan is around that size.

The XL Voyager is fun, and you should get one. But while it is good at hacking and decapitating, its not optimal for much of anything else. So you can have fun with it, and hack stuff with it, but it is not great for daily carry.

The only issue I have with cold steel is I can never buy just one :)
So many options in each series
Yea I have been on the fence about getting one of these but i probably just buy one to keep in my truck

You are correct, and I had one, but it was a bit too pocket filling and chunky. Nice knife though, loved the stonewashed finish. I know, I am hard to please.

Mine never leaves the yard as it's probably too big for the Demokratik Peoples Republik of Maryland, and I really don't need to carry it. When I go out in the woods with my camera, I take a small fixed blade (RAT-3, Fallkniven F1, BK-11) and some small folder. I don't want to have to explain a 5" folder to the Dept of Natural Resources police when I encounter them.

Oh, I carry a Buck Stockman for normal tasks, the citizens won't often see the Voyager.

I just really like the feeling that between the two, can do most anything that can be done with a knife, from delicate to Mau Mau.

I loved my XL Voyager until I lost it! I really only carried it while hiking (right back pocket as above, rarely in the right front) and in uniform (bottom ACU leg pocket).

My X2 Voyager is clipped in my front pocket always. It carries very nice. Since the new Voyager XL is smaller What's the problem . Buy it carry it . I have 2 new old type Vaquero Grande waiting in wings. I carry a KUDU for normal cutting duties in other front pocket . That 4" blade is moving over for the 5" pretty soon

I just recently bought a new model voyager tanto XL. The blade deploys very smoothly and easily and the fit and finish is excellent. I really like the overall look of the knife. My only quibble is the pocket clip. It's just too tight. I'm going to have to take the clip off, put it in a vice and bend it a little. I've already had to do this with the large Espada and the XL Talwar clips. The differently designed clips for the XL Hold-out and XL Counterpoint are fine.
I'm getting the XL voyager vaguero next and I'm sure I'll have to adjust that clip as well. Luckily for my wallet ,I don't like the clip point voyagers so I won't be getting the XL version of that model.
