W-2/Macassar Cutting Bowie

Matt

If your Distal is as good as your distill that knife will not only keep the zombies off, but you can be shure you will not feel them eating your brains. AWSOME knife

Matt
I cant wait to put it to use. BTW I hope it glows Blue in the presence of" perverayors", orcs and zombies.

For the most part I really like these designs, but I am going to post something that is likely to be something that most don't agree on. This knife, and another that was recently posted look to be kind of wasp waisted to me. I think the ricasso area should be wider, with less of a dropped edge. I just don't think the narrow ricasso goes well with the wide blade and meaty handle.

Keith, sometimes I do a wider ricasso/handle junction, but I must say that the small "waist" up at the guard/handle junction makes the knife feel/handle much quicker. You just get a nicer "pivot" point for a snap cut when your choked up at the guard.

I like both looks, and switch them up depending on my mood and what I want the final knife to look/feel like.

I dont know if the above made much sence, but if you can handle one it would become clear.

Also remember that this blade, and most of my other Bowies are well over 2" wide, some over 2-1/2" wide. To remotely feel right, gotta have that ricasso stepped down and a nice waist at the handle/guard.

Matt, I'm sorry I missed your reply. I can certainly understand the reasoning for a small waste. I am sure that functionally it works great, it's just that to me it doesn't give as balanced a look as a thicker waste would. This is just my personal view, and I'm sure that there are many that think it looks great. Not meant as a criticism, only as a personal viewpoint.

Matt, since ya brought it up, I'd love to hear some more details on this part. Where are the pivot points on this piece, and how is your general philosophy on 'em for this type of knife?

No real philosophy other than if feels better, handles better, gives a bit more control than if there was no "waist". For me, I also gain a good point/edge index from the distinct waist up at the gaurd and the distinct thin area right behind the palm swell. The flare at the butt also aids greatly in retention when your REALLY swinging the blade hard/fast.

Nothing worse than a big knife you cant really hold on too, or that has no real index reference for the point/edge etc....

I dont think about it too much, just try to make what works for me. :D

Forget the knife.

I wanna know how you got that hamon to show so well in a photograph. :p

Crazy cool!
