W-2 Round Forging

This is continuation of what Don Hanson III started the other day. I forged a 1" slice of his W-2 down under my 25# Little giant. To roughly 1 1/4" by 1/4" in five heats with flat dies in my Hammer. This took about 5 heats. I'm not going to count the heat when I had to find some tongs to hold it better. One thing about power hammers is that if you can't hold it you can't forge it.

The second picture shows how I start the pinch where the cutting edge will be drawn out. I use a set of cap tongs to hold the blade up against the dies to start where the plunge will be, this also gives you excellent control. The third picture shows part of the drawing you can do with this.

This series shows the blade forged and rough ground. The W-2 was drawn down and forged to shape with a set of flat dies with the front edge and back edge slightly radius, just enough to break the sharp edge.

I hope this was informative.

Dave, very cool pictures! I like the shot of the forged in plung on the corner of the dies like that, VERY TRICKY! Dammit, makes me want a powerhammer :(. Maybe i'll put a Say Mak on the Christmas list and pray :D.

Sam,
Once you do it a couple of times it's pretty easy. Good luck on your Christmas list. Most of the time all I get is a lump of good forging coal in my stocking!

Very nice work... good inspiration on what can be done with the LG... Thanks for posting!

What amazes me is not only how far you can draw out the choil with the power hammer, but how CLEAN the forged surfaces are compared to a hand hammer.

Power hammer moves steel much quicker and with a lot fewer heats.
This leaves a nicer finish, less scale a little or no deep pits.

If this was Sid's personal 25#... I'm sure that helps in the nice finish ;) :D

A slam slam, miss, tap, slam, miss, miss, tap, tap, miss, slam hammer doesn't work so swell to do work like that :D

On Monday I paid a visit to the wonderful folks over in Nebraska City at the Little Giant headquarters. I've attached a link to two videos that were took when I was there. One shows me drawing out a piece of 5160 square barstock on a 25#er and another shows me forging the cutting edge on a 100#er. Make sure to have the volume up when you watch the 25# demo. It just sounds like music to me.

For the BEST go to SID.

Don't waste yer time nowhere else. Go to Sid.

Did I say got to Sid?

Dude....I cried.

My #50 is hammer number 704. And it is wrapped up in a blue tarp in my front yard.

Did I say I cried?

Dang.

Dave from Diller, I've seen your type of anvil somewhere. Was it made by an older gentleman? Is he still making this style?
Thanks for the neat thread!
Robert

Shane, One thing about running Sid's hammers are every time your done using them you walk away with a big grin on your face. We didn't show that. All I could do was walk away and grin saying "Man that hammer WORKS!!".

Robert, If your refering to the anvil at the start of the thread it's nothing special. It's similar to the style of anvil Don Fogg uses. It is a solid piece of steel 4" wide by 7" long and about 33" tall. I have a friend that makes parts for catepillar, this was going to originally be a fork for a front end loader.
