Hello,

I've been looking at W.D. Pease knives and was wondering what forum members think of his work, and whether they make good EDCs?

Thank you,

Cristian

Welcome to the forums.
If you are going to use a Pease folder for an EDC,have on.Makes one of the best.

W.D. Pease is one of the foremost folder makers in the business and his character is equivelent to his knives---above reproach! ---Sandy---

W.D Pease's work is outstanding. I find his knives to be more collector pieces than EDCs, but I am sure that they will work great for that purpose.

Cristian,
I started buying W.D.(Bill) Pease's knives in 1979 and have had quite a few of them over the years. Though I have never used one for a EDC (to rich for my blood) every one has been a solidly built knife (piece of art) I know they would make a great pocket carry piece with great bragging rights. Just by the chance anything did go wrong with the knife I know that Bill would make it right.

Good Collecting!

They are slim, strong, and in both cases, he gave me extra work, not negotiated for in the price. In other words, value added. :D

If you regularly carry $1,000+ folding knives for EDC, you will be extremely satisfied. He produces work on the scale of Horn, Lake and Walker, while charging the prices of an Osborne or Jernigan. If he is not solidly on the "A" list, he is at the absolute peak of the "B" list. It really depends upon your criteria, and wallet depth.

Enjoy, he is an excellent person as well, down to earth, and passionate about making the best knives he can make.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

I love his work. I'm particularly fond of the little fixed blades he makes.

What all have said, especially Sandy! - Gus

You cannot go wrong with a knife by Bill. I have lost track of all I've owned but all have been outstanding. I think I have 3 folders and a couple of his "swinger" fixed blades at this time. In fact one is with Julie Warenski for engraving, probably the third or fourth she'll do for me.

I carried one of his "swingers" for awhile instead of a folder and it worked out great.

I only have one of his folders, but I sure do like it, in fact, it's the first high-end custom I ever bought several years back, and it also may be the only knife I bought when I was new to collecting that I still own, tried a few times to sell or trade it, and then realized I just couldn't do it.

Bill combines super clean workmanship with very appealing designs, and uses only the best natural materials finished to perfection, which surely is a recipe for success.

Here's my one and only. :) (3" blade, white pearl, and engraving by Jere Davidson)

... for all your replies - very informative.

Just to clarify, I'm a total newbie when it comes to knife collecting, and to be honest don't want to really start down that road (did that with watches and I know how addictive it can be :) ). I would just like to own just one really good knife that can be used, and I'd like to hit a home run (so to speak) on the first go. Was considering a Sebie (and still am), but I know from my experience with watches that it's better to go for what you really want from the get go since you'll still end up there anyway, just having spent more money along the way. Unfortunately because of where I live I don't have access to any knives and have to make a decision based solely on information gathered on various sites and from enthusiasts such as yourselves.

Any other options in the $1,000 +/- range would be welcome, along with any advice on what to look for.

Thanks again,

Cristian

You gotta stand back in awe at the guys that work with mother of pearl. I've only done that once and it is in my opinion hard to work with and hard to get sometimes in a 'clear' beautiful finish. Just think of how many you see that have one side handle scale clear and stunning looking and the other side full of flaws.

I love anyone that carves and does engraving also. Great knife there Meglobyte. Good pic too.

Where do you live that you don't have access to knives or related info? A nice example of Pease work on Classic Guns and Knives site. That may help.
PS; You don't accept Emails or PM's?

I'm going out on a limb here, because I'm going to state my honest opinion. It really doesn't matter that this has been a 3 martini night, other than the fact
I'm willing to say openly, what I would normally keep my mouth shut about. I like the man, but relative to W. Osborne or Kenny Steigerwalt, the knives SUCK! Fit and finish is is nowhere near what the price commands. This is THE ONLY maker where my wife (who ...GOD, I love this woman) routinely buys me a knife for X-mas in the $2-4K range who asked me to look at it before, because to her it "wasn't right". She was, it WASN'T and back it went to the dealer. That is also the ONLY time I've sent a knife back to a dealer. Now, before I get SLAMmail, flamed etc. don't you think it's a little strange that for a maker who commands such a high dollar figure for the knife, you never see one on Gary Levine's website?! O.K. preacher fans...go ahead I'm all yours....shoot till I drop! :o

I respect that you are actually having an opinion that runs counter to the herd.

I have owned/purveyed(is that an actual word?) over 2 dozen Steigerwalt knives in my life. I have a gorgeous black mother of pearl piece right now. I like Kenny quite a bit myself, but his is not in Pease's league.

Osborne is the king of what he does in my book, no one else that I can think of is that good. Not Kious, not McConnell, not Horn. The blade finish on the Osborne I got last year is insanely well done, he says he hand rubs to 2000 grit. Do you know how frustrating that can be?

Let's break it down. The two Pease pieces, I got this year. The Rev. knows that they are for my "permanent" collection, and that people are going to be looking hard at the work, so maybe he tries a little harder than he did on yours, I don't know.

There is no side to side play, or front to back. Everything, and I mean everything, lines up. The blade is centered, all angles requiring 90 deg. fit have it. The blade finish is exactly similar to the way Kenny delivers his. It is smooth and walks and talks. no "proud" fits. The gold plated allen heads don't have deformation. The filework is inspired and well executed.

The only thing, and I mean only thing not perfect is on the pearl knife, and the blade-to-handle ratio is off by 1/4". This is allowable, but not perfect.

Gary Levine has two of W.D.'s knives on his site right now.

I am not a "fan" of the W.D.'s work, I simply think that it is a must-have if you consider yourself an evolved knife collector. The Sidelock is not made by anyone else, and is very much worth owning.

That is not a flame, that is a difference of opinion, and a correction of fact.

I live on Grand Cayman (small island in the Caribbean) and not a hotbed of custom knife activity - some machetes around though ;). I can be reached at jinxstarr@yahoo.com if anyone would like to PM me.

Thanks again,

Cristian

I've examined Pease's work over the last few years, and i've always thought they were flawlessly put together. I wish I could afford them.
