I always wanted to make a steampunk like knife for a long time. Now I finally get the time to do it.

It's still work in progress...

Some pictures with the knife so far. (far from finished)

The blade.

And with the handle.

The porthole is with real bended glas on both sides.

A short movie

I Hope you like it...

Well this raises all manner of questions. In fact, I had to "play with my Google" to figure out even the definition of "steampunk" as I was not famaliar with that term.

So while not totally practical, the workmanship and artistic flair in your knife is awesome. My hat's off to your craftsmanship ability!

Glad you call them portholes because that's what I thought when I saw it. I was put in mind of Capt. Nemo and his Nautilus. Terrific work. A lot of steam punk crafts are just junk with watch parts glued to them. Yours is real craftsmanship.

This. Nothing I hate more than gears put on something (without a function) and calling it steampunk. If there is a gear, that gear had better do something imo.

Really nice work. The blade cut I would put more in the form over function category - but it's such a nice form, I'll let it go. :D

Thanks guys,

I also like the real steampunk, but I don't know if I can make it real. The blade is rare but it will work like a real knife and it's build out of 42 parts so far. I also will make a steampunk-like knife box for this knife. something with bended glas and copper and brass and walnut wood. I'm still collecting the parts for the box.

I love those Van Barnett designs.

Tnx, but this is not a Van Barnett design. Van Barnett is a master in steampunk and I'm a starter, this is my first design.

Sorry, I am not very well versed in this type of knife so I assumed that it was inspired by Van's wonderful time machines.

No problem. And yes I looked on the internet for my inspiration on this knife, and I saw the beautiful work of Van Barnett. There are a very little steampunk knifes out there so the inspiration is very limited and I saw the same designs over and over. Maybe mine looks like the work of Van, but it's my own design.

I like Van's work a lot, it will take me years and years to only get in his shadow.

Thats cool !
Now, just figure out an overly complex clockwork arrangement so its an automatic opener.

Very nice.

If you could get that copper tube to insert to the top and bottom at either end that would look cool, and go along with the steam powered theme.

I think that anybody interested in steam punk would be overjoyed beyond words to own this. Like you said about not many knives to look at for inspiration, but if you keep at it, it'll be your knives others will look towards for their inspiration. I look forward to seeing this, the case, & future works!!
Thanks for sharing

More than a decade before steampunk, perhaps might be considered a pre-cursor without gears, an auto, the "Star Ship":

TRML, that piece of yours is lookin' good!

I remember back in the day being very intrigued with Jose deBraga's work.
