W.L.C. What should I bring?

OK, in less then a month I will be taking Marty Simon's survival course at the Wilderness Learning Center. I am really excited about the trip. It is 7 days long and food and tent are provided. I have a hammock on its way, if it gets here in time that will come.

My question is what am I missing. Here is a couple of pics of my gear I intend to bring. Whats missing in the pics are the sleeping bag, pad, flashlight/headlamp, sunglasses, and of course the camera. I have these items and fully intend to bring them, but what, if anything do you suggest I also bring. Or maybe I should loose an item or to?

I also can not decide which blades to bring, I am thinking the Landi MPX will probably not be necessary and I have A farmer camp knife on its way that will probably take its place. I really want to take the Fiddleback, Koster Bushy, and DSKW puukko as I haven't had the chance to use them much if at all. The Mora is for if someone needs to borrow a blade, and I feel obligated to bring the Fox River as thats what Marty and Kevin swears by:D

Oh did I mention our new Mod Kevin is an instructor there:thumbup:

Well your input will be greatly appreciated, thanks

Dude I think you need to send me those blades before I can accuratly reccomend one. I will dispose of the bad ones for you too;)

Seriously if it were me, Id take the fiddleback, the psk, and the farmer.

The other gear looks right on with what i would take. maybe a folding saw or hatchet.

What hammock did you get? Id take it too, just to try out.

Tony,
You may bring any gear that you want. Anything you want to test or evaluate is fine. Your vehicle will be only a couple of hundred yards away from the school so you can keep any extra gear in your car and retrieve it any time you want. Also if you want to sleep in your hammock or any tent you choose, this is alright. Just be sure you bring the basics that I have sent you on the list and if you have any other questions, just feel free to call me anytime. 518-497-3179

Mike- If I could I'd take more! 1 for each day I'd be there:D

Jay- I think I will swap the MPX for the Farmer. The FidleBack is a definate as I don't take it on alot of hikes do to the blade being over 4"(stupid laws:thumbdn:)

The PSKjr w/ MtnMike's survival neck rig will be on me everyday.

I am going to take the Koster Bushcraft as well, I feel that will excell at the jobs Kev & Marty throw at us.

I was thinking about a hatchet but I am sure Marty will have one if needed.

I don't have a folding saw:o, just the one on the SAK. I will eventually get a Silky though.

The hammock I got is the Mosquito Hammock Jungle Hammock. If I have it in time it will definately go.

Marty- thanks for the info, I will probably take you up on that offer as we get closer.

Marty thanks

Tony,

You have a good selection of gear there. The folding saw you have on your SAK will prove very useful when we start carving notches and creating traps, fish spears and fireboards. As for the hatchet, I know there is at least one Fiskars up there and I'll defintely have mine for you to use whenever you want.

Baby wipes are great to have when we are in between showers. Bring your favorite coffee mug if you want (you like coffee right?) or just use the disposable cups. Hand sanitizer is a creature comfort that comes in handy too. Good thinking bringing a pair of leather gloves. You never know when those will come in handy. Bring a book for when you go back to your tent and want to relax for a while before you turn in for the night. Also, make or buy some type of strap to carry that Sigg bottle. It will be a lot easier than stuffing it into a BDU pocket or just tucking it under your arm.

Thanks on the hatchet. Good thinking with the coffee mug, I'll bring a stailess steel cup. Got the wipes and sanitizer in my personal hygiene kit:thumbup:

I'll make a paracord rig for the SIG or just carabiner clip it to me:D

Thanks bro:thumbup:

Dang...sounds like such a great time. I want to go too. Don't forget extra batteries.

Kevin,

Do you suggest one of the larger SAK's like the Trekker for notching and fireboards or will a medium sized SAK, e.g. a Farmer, work as well?

Is there limited availability of showers at WLC?

Is it worth bringing my Silky Saw?

(My son and I are going to be up at W.L.C. at the same time as tonym.)

If it was me I'd take the Farmer, Fiddleback and the Gossman. Plus any others for testing purposes.

I'd be sure to bring a hat, rain gear and bug dope. When I took the Basic last year, I used my Fox River for the whole week. Other than my knife, compass and paracord, most of the gear I brought didn't get used. I also took a lot of photos and notes.

Just be ready to eat well, learn a great deal and have fun!

Jerry

Sharp Eye,

The Farmer will work fine. You aren't doing a lot of sawing when it comes to making notches and you'll be alright with it. Bring the silky if you want, I'd love to do some side by sides with the Gerbers and Bahcos we have up there.

As for the showers, we have one that is used by everyone. Bring sandals if you want to wear inside or just go barefoot. You'll be able to shower up there a couple times at least.

See you up there!

I think I can handle that:thumbup::D

Sharpeye- Look forward to meeting you bro. Please bring your silky, I would love to check it out.

If I may, add these to your kit
Witch Hazel with wash cloth to wipe down between showers the whole body, cut down on the funk and kills any bacteria.
Head net so you can focus on the lessons, can also be used as a fish net. Fits in pocket.
Extra pencil.
Permethrin on All you cloth gear. And inside your car.

will not soak water to your Mosq.Jungle.Hammock had that problem ,If not put your sleeping gear in a plastic bag so it does not get wet when your away, also raise the center of your hammock up so water will not collect.
Get the same length as the original cords, gives you option to go either way.
Get one of those Pencil Bite/Sting applicators or a small bottle of ammonia to apply to your body bites.
some stuff for the sweet tooth:D
Ceegars :}

HEY Akabu, thanks for the tips:thumbup:, but you lost me on the hammock.:o

Can you exp;ain further please?

If you go to the Hammock forums : they have done test on capillitary action of the stock cords as I can attest. Water in the Hammock!
http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=21
as the new cords do not suck up the water as bad. I will still use a drip cord!
Use two Prussic cords on your Fly/Tarp to tighten it at the ends over your hammock/Tent check with Kev/ Marty to look over your set up.

Personally I would take advantage of the safe environment and professional instructors to see how little I could get away with in the bush, as I always pack way too much stuff when I head out too.

That's a really, really excellent point. There's a lot of good gear there that will just make you more comfortable, like the wipes and leather gloves for example, but bringing minimalist gear would be a cool trip. Not that it won't be kickass anyway... :D [insert obscene jealousy here]

I here you fellas, I understand most of the stuff won't get used. I always have the leather golves when I'm out & about as I like to mess with little critters like snakes(non poisonous) and the gloves save alot of bandaids. I did swap out the rain pants and jacket for a poncho though.
