"W" Pattern Damascus WIP my way

Ed, Your always welcome and I am always willing to help those in need as I have been helped. And thanks for the compliment, as for the finished knife, I am not the folder maker so we all are in the same boat there. If I get pics from the maker I will pass them on for sure.

Thanks peppen108.

Mr. Turner, this is the exact reason I decided to join this forum earlier today. I am just getting into knife making and starting with stock removal but hope to begin forging blades and progressing into demascus in the next few years. Thank you for all the time you put into this thread.

Great thread. You have answered the burning question of how big you have to make a billet in order to forge a reasonably sized blade from a single end slice and not stretch out the pattern too much.:D

New to the game and appreciate the detailed wip wow truely a work of art i now have a new hero fj and dimascus dont get much better than that keep doing wip photos or a video i would watch for hours

Hi there Mike.
My gosh that was a tremendously wonderful presentation !!!!!! I still can't believe why the "W's" aren't all crushed to dusty looking things ! Did I say many thanks? Well for sure !!! Frank

JAGknives, your are welcome and welcome to BladeForums. If you have questions be sure to ask in Shop Talk there are lots of great people here willing to help.

Joe, thanks and next up I want to see how big it takes to forge a fighter from one with out much stretch also with out tiling or Ferry Flip ;).

mn.rookie, thanks and glad your an FJ and damascus fan. Also my photographer says he has a hard enough time photographing since I make him do all the forging ;), I thought about doing some video but the one I did shoot a couple years ago was like watching paint dry LOL.

Frank, my friend glad you enjoyed the WIP.

You could do a vid like Kyle Royer- just set up a camera at your workstations and speed up the footage at the tedious parts. Gives a good idea of the work involved, and you can run the vid at normal speed during the exciting stuff. Plus the hyper-chipmunk-speed parts have some intrinsic comedic value apart from the work.

Just sayin'. I'd watch it.

Man. This is a great thread. I have made some damascus before. Reading this and looking at your pictures, lets just say I may stick to simple steels for awhile. Your process is awesome and I thank you for taking us on the trip. Looking forward to seeing pictures of both blades.

Mike - Thanks for taking the time to put this together. Very enlightening!

When you place the forged blade in the vermiculite, do you warm up the vermiculite first with those old bricks(or other method)? I've done this several times, but in room temp vermiculite, and it seems that the blades don't get fully annealed.

Thanks again,

Peter

Thanks guys.

Peter I heat big chunks of scrap metal and I bury those in the vermiculite and I put the blade between them. The bricks are in there for when I do long bar stock and have to make the vermiculite deeper to cover the bar. Hope that helps.
