I used to just carry a small knife--pen knife, SAK, lockback, etc.--usually under 3". Never gave it much thought. Wore a suit or coat and tie everyday, and figured a small knife was sufficient. My father carried a small pen knife. But I eventually got tired of carrying small knives, and decided to get something a little nicer and a little larger. Originally meant to get just one knife (Hah!). In the last year I've probably acquired about 15 knives.

At this point, I have decided I like the following:

Size: 3 1/2"-4", give or take 1/4".

Blade configuration: 1-4 blades.

Blade steel: not picky, but prefer more traditional carbon and stainless steel that I can sharpen in a few minutes on an Arkansas stone; have no need for "super steel".

Blade shapes: clip, spear, lambsfoot are my favorites.

Cover material: stag, bone, or wood.

I like a good fit and finish, of course. And no sharp edges (except on the cutting edge of the blade!). It has to be comfortable to hold and use.

Favorite patterns are stockman, trapper, swayback, canoe, barlow, scout, and the Spanish navaja. So far!

My only criterion is that I want the knife more than the money it costs.

What can I say, I'm a knife slut . . . almost everything appeals to me. I have folding knives from 2½ to 5 inches, and fixed blades from 5 to 12 inches in length. 1, 2, 3, and 4 blade folders. Handles of wood, celluloid, acrylic, Delrin, micarta, bone, ram horn, cattle horn, buffalo horn, stag, Sambar stag, elk stag, caribou stag, G10, leather, alox, cellidor, even stone. Sorry, I'm just not much help! (And there is NO help for me!)

Knives with opposite-end blades have never been very high on my list- SAKs excluded. 3 - 3 1/8" closed length is probably my sweetest spot. I like bare head designs and prefer long slender clip points over tall clip points. Lighter pulls are pretty much a requirement for me to actually put a knife in my pocket for more than one day. Strong preference for wood and bone over delrin, micarta, G10, etc.

If I notice a knife in my pocket, it won't be in there for long. The BF Buck is incredible to me because it's 4" long and opposite ended, but it is super light, has good pulls, and I don't notice it in my pocket. I notice Case Mini Trappers and my 2-blade GEC TC #14 much more in my pocket than this Buck.

The Peanut is my favorite pattern that I've used. A bare head Wharncliffe Trapper at 3 - 3 1/8" with "Turkish" or "California" clip and ebony or rosewood covers would probably be a game-ender for me.
