Here is a knife I finished up today! On a roll:thumbup:!

Steel: W1 from Aldo (thanks again Aldo!) quenched in BRINE (woo scary:eek:)
Handle: Amboyna burl scales (thanks again Mike!), 3 brass pins
Length: 10 11/16ths overall
Blade: 7 1/16th
Handle: 3 5/8ths
Taper: a hair over 1/4 thick at the butt, down to 1/8th at the tip
POB: right in front of the handle

Fit and finish:
Satin finish on the blade, handle sanded to 400 grit then scotch brited then boiled linseed oiled, a few scratches here and there, SHARP.

Overall impression:
A bit miffed the handle is short, not unusable short you can still get a full grip on it no problem, but would have been nice to have atleast another 1/2 inch. Other than that VERY happy with how it turned out, did I mention SHARP??!?

I had posted this one awhile back, it was coming along great and I said how nice it would look with Amboyna for the scales, but lamented at not having any :(. Mike Davis shot me an email saying he happened to have a gorgeous set of bookmatched amboyna scales and if I would like them to put on the knife(thanks AGAIN Mike)! The steel I got from Aldo last year at Ashokan, he said "here, see what you can do with this" :D (thanks AGAIN Aldo).

Comments and critique welcome!

Sam, nice looking blade there. One question, is that a big chip in the blade or a notch that you put there on purpose ?? I can tell for sure..

THANKS GUYS!!!!!!!

Louis, it's a notch to mark the end of the edge, it's a bit odd shaped cause I had to use the bench grinder stone to cut it in as a file would not touch the steel.

I think it needs a finger guard. If you stabbed hard with it you may see what I mean.
I keep looking at that chip in the blade. I know its not a chip but only because you said it wasnt.

Thanks for the input Bruce, I cann't figure out how to make the notch look less like a chip. It is more a utility knife than a fighter, for obvious reasons. Like a guy on another foum said "how often do you get in a knife fight anyway?!?!" hehe.

It's not that I want to make it more defined, it's just I want to amke it look less like a chip out of the edge without making it bigger.

hey dude, so nice to see a blade with a set of clean lines and yet surprisingly fresh details... like how you sculpt the line of the edge, the transition line between bevel and spine and of course the dimple cut (the notch). very nice.

Sam is a good student of the,"Opportunist School of Bladesmithing and Salesmanship". If you chip a blade, just dull the edge behind it, call it a notch with an irregular shape, and say it is an ancient style of fighting knife.

Hey Sam,

I think it's pretty cool looking. Now make a Bowie!!!!

Aldo

PS - If you need another piece of W-1 it'll be waiting.

nice work there sam,

Im still in the nearly finished phase I have at least a dozen knives 70 percent finished

the hardest part is always making junk and learning skills

Thanks guys! Aldo, I got some park's #50 on the way soon (thanks Patrick!)and after getting the gas forge I can do some HT'ing of my own blades finally, which is my last major stumbling block. I have been dying to try some bowies with hamon like Matt Lamey(though i'll probably not pull it off as well), that guy is a bowies-with-hamon GOD, as well as some other ideas I got worked up :D. My boss got a scratched eye at my job so no chance of getting a day off this week to come down your way, and I leave this Sunday for training for 2 weeks, so hopefully after that I will be able to get down your way to play a bit. I hope to eat up the rest of this W1 bar for the polearm challenge so i'll be talking to you about that when I come see you thanks!

Thanks Bryce, the learning curve at the beginning is always hard for me, it seems sometimes that apeice will come together and I will be 100% happy with it, then another will come together and I will......well let's just say I learn alot from it hehe.

Finished the sheath tonight! Stitching is a bit rough, but overall I am happy with it. Let me know what you think.

Going to do a bit of fun metal work as far as how it will be worn, right now it just kind of tucks into the belt.
