Please pardon the impromptu "deck photography" here, but it was so nice I just had to take some photos outside. Seems like it's been single digit temps for three months!
Here is a 9 1/2" W2 clay backed bowie for that "hamon-esque" feeling.
The hardware is my old 1903 wrought iron.
Now, that handle is a piece of curly walnut.
There's about twice as much "curl" when viewed from the other direction, or in different light.
You guys know what I mean. It "moves" around. (Chatoyance)
I have a retired friend who cuts firewood to stay busy. He stopped by two years ago with a couple chunks he just cold bring himself to through in the fireplace! He gave me one that had this in it, and another one that I got two BEAUTIFUL "flaming" crotch pieces out of.
They had all been up in the rafters of my garage for these last two years.
I just sent them off to have them all stablized.
I already have another belt knife made from the "flaming" crotch, I just need to do some hot-bluing on that one.
This is a beautiful handful at 15 inches.
Thanks!

Coming soon!
No kidding, that "flaming crotch" is some of the most phenominal material I have ever seen! And it was from a piece of firewood!!
I'm gonna start looking through friends' firewood piles!
No kidding - at all.

Karl, Your killing me........ Did you do an etch on the nut? That's some beautiful firewood!

No, Ray, that nut is stainless steel. I just spun it on a worn Gator belt and it's really "flat" lookin' in person.
I have sand blasted them before and they looked pretty good. I can still do that on this one if you want me to.

I'm glad someone got the joke  Ain't looking through woodpiles akin to cattle rustlin?

Yeah, I've run across really beautiful wood used where they weren't appreciated for their beauty.

I know what you mean Will. There is this old beautiful walnut tree behind my office with so much twists and burls in the tree that I can hardly keep myself from cutting in down one night. :)

oh, I almost forgot, Karl that is a great looking knife. :) Get to talking about finding all of this great looking wood and get sidetracked real easy.

Sheesh, had to make sure i was on the right forum! all this talk of flaming crotch, etched nut, 15 inch hand full, good looking wood....:D

great knife! stellar work as usual!

if you keep finding firewoood like that, let me know! i'd be happy to cover shipping:p

and oh yea, i have had to turn on my ac in the shop a couple times already! 75 degrees today:D:D
had to rub it in!

peace

Karl,

As usual a stunning piece.

A side on using beautiful wood. My father put a new fence around his front yard a few years ago. When I saw it i about dropped a load in my pants. This was all lumber he milled himself and all old growth curly REDWOOD. Talk about some nice furniture wood. Oh well they used to throw all the figured stuff in the teepee burners back in the day.

Great knife, with all the talk about the flaming crotch no one mentioned that great hamon' Excellent work
