I just love using this end-grain spalted maple!
Once it is stabilized it just turns into a solid piece of plastic.
The mild steel take-down fittings were hot blued and the W2 blade was clayed for a nice hamon.
(Will be on my table in Atlanta)
8 1/8" blade and 13 1/4" overall.

Very nice, Karl. Is that the wood that weighed 5 pounds when it went out for stabilizing and 12 pounds when it came back?

Holy smokes! I really like spalted wood in general, but that is truly stunning!

Oh, btw, the rest of the knife looks pretty fine, too. :) Thanks for raising the bar once again. That pic is going in my knife-porn folder.

Joe, it was 5.6 OUNCES and 11.4 OUNCES. that was just one piece.
This was spalted by Larry Bailey in his basement and then he sends them to K and G for stabilizing.

I'm pretty well stocked-up on handle materials, but I'd love to hear more about how that fella "makes" it spalt. What's that sort of thing cost? I have some nice curly maple that would look awesome spalted.

I would not go quite that far.

I don't like the fact that it is not in my possession. ;)

Just beautiful. I have spalted piece I sent out today with a bunch of other stuff to WSSI. I hope it turns out just as gorgeous. Then I hope I don't screw it up when I use it! Love the work, Karl.

Karl, that is absolutely fantastic. That handle really looks nice on that blade to say the least:thumbup:!

We really need some better smilies!

Karl, all your knives are gorgeous.
