Forged a W2 spearhead today. Started with some 5/8ths round W2 I got from my buddy Joe (thanks again Joe!!!!), and forged the socket and blade. The geometry shape is triangular. I am very pleased with how it is going so far. Just as forged now.

let me know what you think. Hope no one is made I used W2 :D.

Sam, there are no wild boar in this county. Do you think Joseph Brant and his friends are returning ? If he is I want to get ready !

Nice use of the materials Sam,the hamon possibilites are great with that W-2!
The shape will be fun to play with too, what do you have in mind for wood?

If Joseph Brant was returning, I would surely have more than a spear(maybe my tomahawk too:))!

Kali, maybe..........

JOE! Thanks again, it is some good stuff. I am not sure as far as wood goes, a nice 6 or 7 foot piece of tiger maple sure would be nice:), maybe a pole of desert ironwood :D:D. I think I can get some oak or hickory from Home Depot, if not I'll just cut a nice supple sapling.

Oak dowel for closets works well for spears. I've used it and it worked well.

I think I got mine at Lowes or the Home Depot. They had it in a few different diameters.

Very cool I have a question for anyone that might know the answer. How do you forge a totally closed socket? Do you have to bore out a bar and then forge it down around a mandrel to lengthen the socket and thin out the walls and then forge the blade/tip?

What I have done a couple times is take a piece of black pipe, ( no galvanized please ! ) of the proper inside diameter for the shaft, and neck down the end to fit the tang of the spear head. Heat up three or four inches, evenly all around, put that section on the anvil, and hammer lightly and quickly as you rotate it. It takes a couple heats, and don't get impatient and hit too hard, because it will go lopsided, ( I read that somewhere ! :-) The last heat, I put the tang in and squish it up snug, then weld a bead around it to seal it up. Give it a try.

Good idea Ray, makes me wish I had a welder again. I was given a quick lesson on spearhead making from a new friend I met at Peter's Valley this year, had a W1 blade and a mild forge welded on socket, it was pretty cool.

Just saw a photo of a hunter in Africa who , on horseback, got a gemsbok [oryx] with a spear !! Horse and rider exhausted !

Cool Robert! I have a lot of respect for those that hunt for real deal survival, especially with the classic tools!

Here's the photo. The horse is really exhausted !

WOW, looks hot there to boot, poor horse!

Tried a trial test fit with a short shaft like an assegai, I kinda like how it feels this way. Going to try a mockup with a long shaft too, and then decide from there. As is now though, throws REAL good.
