Does anyone know where I can get W2 steel? What, besides files, is it used for?

Knives, for one.
Check with Don Hanson he uses a lot of it and occasionally has some for sale.

I think Don is out. (I got the last 2 box's:p:D:p) I contacted Diehl Steel and they were able to track some down. BUT it was $8.50/lb.... Also they only had 2 sticks. You might try Aldo Bruno he had some a while ago. Other than these it is going to be hard to find. You may want to try w-1 or even 1095. If you are looking for Hamon 1095 will work great, just look at Don Foggs website. Killer Hamon with 1095.

Aldo is trying to run some down. I twisted Don's arm and got him to sell me a box of the huge 1 3/4 round bar, but I think he is down to his personal stash. I have bought well north of 250 pounds of his stuff in sizes ranging from 3/4 inch rounds to the huge 2 x 2 1/2 squares and it is great steel. Even I can get a nasty edge on it....lol:p If you want to know what can be done with Don's stuff when real masters get hold of it, just check out his W2 knives and the Blade Forums Bowie among others:thumbup:

Try Unisteel in Sterling Heights Michigan, their # is 586-826-8040. The first order, for some reason, has to be C.O.D. which of course adds to the cost. After the first order its not too bad.
I've used Dons W2 with great results too, its nice stuff for sure

But when its gone........Unisteel W2 produces quite nice Hamon with proper handling too as evidenced by pics

I love w-2. It can have a pretty drastic learning curve. Here's one I just finished.

This is some of Dons W-2. Stocked up with a lifetime supply. If you can find it snap it up. It is dwindling fast. Maybe Aldo can have a special run done:thumbup::D:thumbup:

I must respectfully disagree regarding the learning curve. Much of the "learning" has been done by us poor schlubs who started buying W2 recently:D Unless you are trying to get a hamon, its pretty easy and realtively forgiving once you buy the right oil and learn to let it soak before quenching unless you want alloy banding. Don's stuff gets SCARY sharp and even makes a ham fisted amateur like me look good........lol.

I was referring to Hamon development in the learning curve. Getting this stuff to heat treat well is (easy) compared to some others. I have been working this stuff for almost a year and a half and am just now getting to where I can sometimes get the results I want. That is even after talking with Don, He told me he still goes nuts sometimes not getting the results he wants. But when He hits it He hits it hard.

The pieces I have are BIG:

1 pce 1 3/4 x 5 7/8 x 40 7/8"
1 " 1 3/4 x 3 5/8 x 96 1/4"
1 " 2 1/4 x 4 x 59 7/8"
1` " 2 x 8 x 28 1/4

I need to slice them length wise and plan on building a small plate saw. I figure slicing it to 5/16and 3/8 and keeping the slices from each piece separate so that you get the same Chemistry for the whole batch. If interested it's first come, first serve. More details when you get in touch at njsteelbaron@gmail.com.
