i’m wondering if anyone could give me some help with using w2 steel. i found a flat ground bar of w2 and i would like to make a knife out of it, is there any special method i should know about when shaping it? i plan on doing stock removal since the steel is already ground flat. Also is there a best way to heat treat it? thanks!

How do you know it is W2?

And no... You work it like normal steel. W2 is a little hard to HT at home, as it needs a soak and a VERY fast quench.

I suggest , if you haven't, read the "stickies"at the top of the page. I will say this. It will not be a simple job of getting a few files and going to it. If you can get it sized down, you could send it off to a heat treater. I hope your project can go ahead.

I’m very new to this forum and i’m not sure what “stickies” are. i have a belt grinder that i normally use so i would be using that to do all the shaping. i may end up just sending it off to a heat treater then thank you.

i bought it from a steel supplier. i’m thinking of just sending it off to have it heat treated. if i were to do it my self do you think a water quench would be fast enough?

The stickies are the yellow highlighted threads on the main page of the sub-forums.

oh! thank you for letting me know, i’m having some issues navigating the site so i really appreciate it.
