Tanto? Kwaiken? Take your pic!

I've always been a huge fan of Japanese knives and swords, especially the way they are made. The clay coating during hardening, the gentle curve of the blade, the diamond wrapped handle over ray skin, and the intricately carved details in some of the tsubas, menuki, fuchi, and other koshirae. Especially cool are the mysteries and mystique surrounding the blades themselves, and how sharp they were! I recall two stories, one being that a certain katana carried by a samurai warrior was so sharp, if a silk handkerchief was left to fall onto the upturned edge, it would be split in half! And another, where a particular katana was placed into a moving river, edge upstream, and it was so sharp that a maple leaf riding on the current would be sliced in half! Now that is GINSU sharp! It's HIGHLY doubtful that my knife is quite that sharp, but it was whittling hair still left on my arm! I'm extremely proud to offer this knife to you, and don't even have the words of how much pride I have right now! I don't want to let this one go at all, but that's why I made it in the first place! I want YOU to have it!

The steel is one of the best for creating a hamon, W2 tool steel. The steel was fully normalized, thermally cycled for super fine grain, and then clay coated to create the differential hardening. This baby was only tempered at 350°F, so I'm guessing around 63 Rockwell C hardness, and the sharpening session seemed to confirm that hardness level. The blade has a satin finish and was vinegar etched to show the contrast of the hamon. The handle is made with genuine ray skin, and is wrapped in cotton tsuka-ito. The guard is a 3 layer Turk's head knot. The spine has been mirror polished, and the balance point is right at the base of the Turk's knot. The tang was milled with weight reduction holes, so it's light and fast!

W2 @ 63HRC, differentially hardened
OAL: 10 5/8"
Blade: 5"
Handle: 5 5/8"
Steel thickness at guard: .130"
Edge angle: 15° per side
Genuine ray skin handle
Cotton tsuka ito wrap

Some of the photos show a few horizontal lines along the blade, these are oil streaks from wiping it down before taking the shots, and are not on the blade itself. The finish is very clean!
