I just leave the tang somewhat coarsely finished (60 to 120 grit) and make sure to use plenty of epoxy. The times i've had to remove handles after doing this have been a complete PITA, and the handles i've had break have been due to lack of epoxy or poor design (don't put spacers too close to the end of the tang)
