JBravo,
You have gotten an honest answer from Emerson. As the Zen saying goes "no action, is an action".
Suffice to say, on the custom side of the house Emerson has put himself in a hole that he chooses not to pull himself out of. While we can guess at and debate these reasons all day. Only Emerson can answer the question and he chooses not to do so in a public forum.
So we go back to the two simple choices I wrote in an earlier post:
1) Stick with your order till the bitter end.
Accept the excuses year after year.
2)Cancel your order, take the money and buy a better knife.
Guys, you have to be honest with yourselves.
It should be very clear to everyone involved.
That Emerson does not care about you or your knife. He has no intentions of ever honoring his delivery times. When he speaks to you he will tell you what ever you want to hear to pacifiy you until it is time for the next excuse.
Realisticly, who knows what they are doing a year from today. Now if you can't answer that how can you expect to know what you are doing 4-5 years from today. Unless of course you are getting out of Jail or your Military commitment ends on that day.
So when Emerson or any other maker starts telling you 3, 4, 5 years and longer. At best it is no more than a guess.
What they should do, is take your name, tell you they can not guarantee when this knife will be made. However, they will call you when they are ready to start the knife. If at that time you can tell them you still want it or can refuse it. Either way, neither you or the knifemaker is on the hook.
This is probably the most fair and equitable way of handling a multi-year wait.
Many of these makers who have multi-year waits would be amazed at how many of the address, phone numbers, etc. that they have are no longer valid. How many of their orders will not go filled as these customers have gotten married, have kids, have a big new house, no longer interested in knives, etc.
At this point you have been given the opportunity to decide between need and want.
The question is "Do I really need this knife and do I want to put up with all the BS that this maker is giving me.
I know there are a lot of you out there who have orders and do not want to speak up. As you feel this may cause you to lose your order. Congratulations, you just made yourself a victim!
