Waiting on Magnacut!

So has anyone else put all of their knife purchases on hold because they are excited and waiting for releases in Magnacut?

I've been into knives for decades and while I am not a collector only an enthusiastic user, I still have managed to accumulate more knives than I can ever use. (I periodically purge down below 20 before they start accumulating again.) I had several knives on my radar, but I'm really excited about the possibilities of Magnacut, and I can't find the enthusiasm to actually buy anything until I've had an opportunity to try out this steel. (I missed several releases, and the upcoming Native Salt from Spyderco in Magnacut is not exactly what I'm looking for right now.)

I've become picky about my purchases, I want magnacut in a slipjoint and a small EDC type fixed blade. My current favorite folder is a traditional made with modern materials: Viper sowbelly stag with titanium bolsters and M390 blade steel. I see Lionsteel has a folder coming in magnacut, maybe they'll put it in one of their slipjoints too.

So anyone else trying to patiently wait?

I am waiting for a Millie and Chief in general. And a new Chaparral. Even the CruCarta PM2 looks interesting. When they release a Magnacut model I like I might buy one, but I don't need any LW knives ATM. I sold a couple so I can buy a fluted CF Native recently.

No, because it doesn't make other steels obsolete. My daily carry is a ZT0620 in M390 and I don't plan on changing that any time soon.

I'm actually waiting for scales since I already have a Magnacut Mule. Haven't used it yet since I don't want to use it without a handle.

I wouldn't say that I'm putting all my purchases on hold, but there are a couple of knives on my list that I know will eventually be released in Magnacut, and it could cause me to put those purchases off for a while. Patience however, when it comes to knife purchases, ain't my strong suit, so we'll see ;)

Now, the one I really can't wait for and one I know will be an instant purchase is the Manix LW in Magnacut

Yeah to be honest I am buying into the hype of it so far and waiting (hoping) it lives up to it. As someone who hates and fusses (more than needed) over rust, magnacut seems like a great answer without loosing edge retention and/or toughness.

I am not exclusively holding off from anything else, but it sure is helping me be rather picky, slow to attack and not impulse buy. I am trying to keep my collection to a minimum and magnacut is helping with that

No not at all. There are plenty of other steels out there worth buying and also, many knives of interest to me don’t come in Magnacut anyways which is fine

I was in the pass around with the Spyderco Magnacut Mule and it didn't impress me as being much better than other modern steels.

I'm not sure what all the hype is about? Anyone want to let me in on the secret?

I think the goal was to create an extremely well balanced steel, with mid to high edge retention, toughness, and stainlessness.

Edit: to me, this is perfect quality for a small fixed blade!

Really, in the same veins as CPM154, ELMAX, Vanax...

Hype = money

I’ve bought four fixed blades in Magnacut so far and really like it. If you want a slip joint in the steel, the Tactile Bexar might fit the bill. I believe it won some awards.

Yup, give it another 6-12 months and the floodgates should open.
S30V proliferated pretty quickly and I can't see MagnaCut going any differently. People just need a little more time to get factory HT sorted, plus the lead time for more volume at Crucible, and then we're off to the races.

Exactly what Dergyll said. Well rounded very balaced steel. I want another small fixed blade and this steel should be excellent. I have good knives in M390 (My current favorite steel) including a great Bradford 3.5 guardian, instead of getting another knife that pretty much duplicates a current knife, I want to try magnacut. It should allow for a thinner edge geometry without sacrificing the stainless quality I like in M390, and be tougher and less chip prone to boot.

Once upon a time I chased extremes, like with zdp and 10V. 10V is a rust magnet in my experience. Or toughness with fixed blades in 3V. Nowadays, I find I want the best balance of properties and Magnacut looks to be the new leader in a great all around stainless.

Nope…. 2 knives are coming in the mail from Europe, another two, next week. I’m planing on Police 4 in K390 with some CF scales, and if Magnacut shows up on Manix of some sort, I’ll get this one too.

What kind of testing did you do to the blade?

I have been using my Magnacut Mule. It is a great all around steel (after some mess up of initial sharpening). But since I do not use knives 9-5 nonstop everyday, I really do not see this steel to be significantly different/better than other super steels (again it appears to be a well-balanced steel). So, is it worth waiting a bit? Yes. is it worth holding on all other purchases? Not me.

No.
The only time blade steel has been a major factor in a knife purchase was with my Spyderco Salts, specifically bought for water activities. I guess Magnacut is supposed to be awesome with corrosion resistance, but the niche is filled already.

I see utility for an outdoor fixed blade in Magnacut, but I’m not really in the market for another at this point.

Edge retention should be about the same as Cru-Wear, if you've never been impressed by modern tool steel then there really is nothing new to see here.
At normal edge angles and used on a small blade you're probably not going to notice much, but a 3" knife with a 30 degree edge bevel is sitting within very comfortable design limitations.
Sharpen to 20 degrees inclusive, or use MagnaCut in a high performance 10" chopping blade, and you'll see any other high alloy stainless failing in spectacular fashion.
Combine that with the steel effectively being saltwater rated and you've got the ultimate go-anywhere-do-anything blade steel.

I'll buy a Magnacut Delica when it comes out, but other than that, no. Magnacut will not do anything that my favorite knives in S35vn, Cruwear, or XHP won't or can't do. I recognize that it was created by one of our own, but personally it sure feels like a bandwagon fad after seeing the SHOT show coverage.

Look at the MBK Sea Otter. Supposedly they should have a new batch in soon… in Magnacut.
