Waiting on my Grizzly and contemplating earwax...

I ordered my Grizzly grinder over the internet about 2 weeks ago. There was no notice that they were back ordered, and the e-mail that I got confirming the order sait 2-4 weeks backorder. (Sigh!)So Friday I called the Customer service to find the ETA for the grinders, was told 3-6 weeks (for a total of 5-8 weeks from time of order). Since I am now idly waiting, does any one know how earwax is generated?

I share your pain. I ordered a Grizzly in mid August, and they said it should be here in 4 to 6 weeks, and fri I got a postcard saying they havent received their shipment yet and they would send it to me as soon as it got in and that i could cancel it at anytime. I go home for break in oct, so it better be there then!!

LMAO!!!!!!!!!! NEW FOLKS! LMAO!!!!!!!!!

Not so new L6-when I moved here to East Tennessee about a year ago, I had to part ways with my entire shop. That included a Wilton Square Wheel. New to the forum, yes, and new to Grizzly, OH yes. If I didn't have to take a 60% cut in salary for the same job here (Network Admin)AND buy a house, I would not be contemplating how earwax is generated...

I don't know how it's generated but I have noticed that more is produced when one is under stress. Possibly friction in the brain?

I am in the same boat. I Ordered a bunch of material from Texas Knifemakers supply and received it in two weeks. I ordered the grinder a week before the material. Now I have everything I need to start my first knife except the friggin grinder. I am losing my patience.

Anyone know the best place to send O-1 to have it heat-treated?

Grizzly started out by refusing to ship to Canada when I placed my order. When I found a company (Borderfree.com) that would get it for me, Grizzly backordered it for me at least 2 - 4 weeks. DUHH! Can you say service?? Grizzly can't! I cancelled the order and bought a Bee Metal variable speed (Like Wilton). It is on the truck and should arrive either tomorrow or Tuesday. Service! Grizzly had my order TWICE and threw it away.

'nuff said.

Yup, Grizzly has lots of problems filling orders. I ordered a buffer about two months ago. They informed me it was backordered. It finally arrived last week. Fortunately, I have another buffer and this was just an extra, so I was not particularly concerned.

If you need something fast, don't order from Grizzly.

Send me an E-Mail when your Grizzly grinder arrives, so I will know they are back in stock so I can order one and get it in two weeks> (grin)

Rob! What is the info on the Bee Metal variable? Price, website, blah blah? I would really appreciate it!

I like the brain friction theory- I thought that maybe it is generated with boredom- brain not moving much, and as a lubricant, not being used, it puddles in the ears.

For the requisite knofe topic, I finally resorted to files, sandpaper, a Benz-O-Matic MAPP gas/Oxy torch, 3lb hammer, and the metal angle iron edge of my long bench. I forgot how much work that is- haven't done that for about 10 years!

I'm also waiting for my Grizzly grinder.

They had them in stock back in July. In late July I had an order placed waiting for payment. They never mentioned that they would only hold it for 10 days! Sooo..after 12 days, I called them with my credit card info. They informed me my order was cancelled because it was over the time frame. AND they had no more grinders. AND it would be on back order for months! My desk phone almost became a permanent part of my wall!!!

This is giving me time to organize my shop. I built a new work bench. Everything is ready for the new Grizzly.

If I could afford a higher priced option, I would. I'll just have to continue to impatiently wait.

Hmm... well the price is about $2050 CDN which is about $1400 US for the variable speed. I didn't go looking for the website because I've seen then and talked with makers who own and like them. I think Jim Downie might have some info on his site.

I hope that link is right.

It comes with 8" contact wheel, square wheel type platen, tool rest. The price is hard to beat for a well appointed variable speed. I think the fixed speed is around $1000 US.

Rob! I may need to investigate the Kalamazoo machine- my income for the same job (network admin) dropped by 60% by moving here- this is why I was contemplating the Grizzly. I need to get an inexpensive grinder until I can sell a few knives to buy a good one. Thanx for the info, though!

P.S. I get to learn to forge Damascus blades soon!

I understand the budget thing. I thought I'd be using the 2 x 42 for years to come and grizzly was going to be huge jump forward. Then I accepted a very large order and I just didn't have the time to screw around any more. The deposit on the order was sizeable so I bit the bullet.

I just cancelled my order from Grizzly- they said another 4-6 weeks! I just calle and ordered a Coote setup- a couple of hundred $ more than the Grizzly, but he is shipping as soon as I decide on the options, and from earlier posts, I'm getting a much better machine, AND supporting an American small business!
Advice for those waiting on the Grizzly- get the Coote machine!

Well, you got me wondering too. From a medical info site:
The skin cells lining our outer ear canals include tiny glands, similar to sweat glands, which produce wax. The point seems to be that this acts as a protective layer, which traps dust and other particles which get into the ear. The wax slowly works its way to the outside, taking the trapped dirt and dust with it.

Most people's ears clear the wax, which probably comes off on our pillows and towels etc., at a rate which means that it does not build up. Some people may, at some stages in their lives produce wax at a faster rate. Other people have either one or both ear canals that is narrow, or that is at an angle which slows the natural passage of the wax. In these people the wax builds up.

The wax may eventually block off the ear canal all together. If this happens, hearing is reduced, and there is an increased likelihood that stagnation may lead to an infection building up behind the obstruction.

Knife Content: cleaning the wax out of one's ears with a knife is a bad idea.

get the coote grinder! had mine for three years, having a variable 2x72 gives you longer belt life too. you only need to sell a couple of knives for the diff,
