quick question about the waki's. did they ever say what the crescent shaped pommel and talon holes were intended for?

Decoration.

I guess you could get some twine and tie a golf ball in there. Then toss it in your golf bag and if the zombies decide to invade the 14th green, you'd be all set - and look covert while doing it.

Seriously - it's a design detail and nothing more. Much to my dismay as well.

It's been hinted by Eric several times that there was a functionality to it, but that functionality has never been revealed. Of course maybe Eric is just messing with us.
