I was at the school yard not that long ago and we saw that. The sun was setting and it was as if someone shined a searchlight from the other side of the earth. The teacher didn't know what it was, either did I.

If you really like this kind of thing there's a neat old book called "The nature of Light and Colour in the open air" by M. Minnaert. Dover reprinted it some time back. I've had my copy for > 2 decades so I'm not sure if it's still available.
