Walker design -- loose molded clip fix

Hi, guys. I've got a Walker design folder with a pinned, molded handle which I carry almost every day. I made a mistake one day and wore it on a belt, which significantly loosened the clip. Now it sometimes falls out of my pocket, which is not cool in Japan where carrying a knife is frowned upon.

I talked to a Spyderco rep at the Seki knife festival who recommended the following fix. He said to put it in really hot water with the clip rubber banded tight for a while, then transfer it to cold water.

Any opinions on that?

The Walker is in the middle in this photo:

I'll try to get a pic of the clip up soon...

Thanks for your help in advance!

You might try posting this question in the Maintenance, Tinkering, and Embellishment forum in the General category.

I would think that you might have better luck with a heat gun and a C-clamp. I just don't see hot water getting the FRN hot enough to really make a difference. YMMV, though.

Please let us know if this works. I have an older Delica that has a loose clip and could use a little tightening up.

Thanks,

Worth a try. Can't hurt, might help. You might want to place a shim under the open area, and place the rubber band at the extreme end. You want to bend that end toward the handle, without bowing the clip in the middle.

Hot water will work, I have also used an iron(on low heat) and rubber bands.
Good luck.

Cool. I'll try it and let you know how it works out. Thanks for the shim idea, Mr. Deacon.

Okay, I tried it...

I put a plastic spoon handle in as a shim (thanks again, Mr. Deacon) and wrapped the end of the clip tightly with a couple of tough rubber bands. Using the spoon as a dipping/retrieving handle, I soaked the knife in boiling hot water for ten minutes. I then transferred it to ice water for several minutes (forgot to keep close track of the time in cold water).
The result was good, with a slightly tighter fit, but not back to "as new" condition. Of course, as far as I can tell, it had no detrimental effect on the knife or handle, so if I wanted to try again, I s'pose I could. The shim was relatively thin, just thick enough to create a very slight bend--perhaps if I were to use a thicker shim...?
Should I leave well enough alone?

I've tightend the molded clip on my C14SYL Rescue with good results, I used a hot-air-gun and a bench vise. Maybe this will help you too.
