bquinlan, the through the glass antennas don't work well.Mag mounts or better a permanent installation would perform much better.

I know that there's a fair amount of loss in inductively-coupled antennas. Can anyone give me suggestions on the best way to run antenna cabling out to the antenna? I'm leary of drilling holes in my car body, but I'm not sure how well the leads will handle being closed in a door either... Any suggestions? Are there places that will wire a car antenna for a reasonable price?

My wife and I decided to get our licenses after she got involved with the hurricane relief efforts. It seems like another way we might be able to help in the future. And it may come in handy for our own use too.

Mag mounts are the most convenient, but if you're gonna leave the antenna on most of the time, any of the permanent mounts are better. Good antenna performance requires a "ground" which mag mounts don't offer... forget about thru-window mounts... you might as well use a long copper wire shoved up your nose for an antenna.

Hi All-

And here I was thinking that GMRS might be the optimal solution for free push-to-talk communications within a half-mile zone while hiking, camping, skiing, or driving. Looks like it might be back to the drawing board!

Hi All-

Looks like that Icom F-21GM is a combination FRS/GMRS radio after all!

It is if you use the Icom F-21
But that's nothing... I'm gonna make Garageboy carry around a modified Icom dual band mobile, putting out 50/35 watts, an optima car battery, Solar charging panel and a full wave antenna on our next camping trip.

bquinlan, drilling holes in the vehicle is not a problem. No it won't reduce resale value etc. Antennas are best when longer and higher .The 102" is a 1/4 wave length on 11m .Less than that will give less performance but there are trade offs .Garages ? you can use QD or fold over mounts .Mag mounts mean running wires through doors which can get in the way and the door may squeeze the cable. A drilled hole requires removing head liner but feeding wire is no problem. Talk to a CB or Ham dealer or to local hams.

I'm a ham and we run dual band 2 meter / 70 centimeter FM rigs, about 100/70 (respectively) watts out on both. All members of my family are licensed.

But, in a real emergency (especially in wilderness or remote areas) only a satellite phone will suffice. We have two Iridium 9505A's on standby.

Yes, still in service. The US Govt uses them (both DoD and non-DoD), but they are not the same as they have some plug ins that offer encryptions that are not available to the consumer.

There are a number of similar services available to consumers, it's just not cheap.
