These photos are from a couple weeks ago, as I've had trouble uploading pics until now. Some brilliant autumn colors, some blades, and a little fire! :) Enjoy.

It had been raining, but what better time to practice skills than in challenging times?

I split some green wood for use as a cup stand.

...there's fire!

No excuses here, my skills were simply not up to the task this day. The fire would start, but would not hold on soaking wet wood. Luckily, I always bring a backup. Heat tab!

A little heavy-duty tin foil in my kit, folded over the cup.

Tea, earl gray.

Cheers! There's nothing like a hot beverage on a cold wet day.

Woodpeckers have been hard at work on this pitch pine stump. It was nearly all hollow. The knife is my Landi PSK w/natural micarta scales.

I found some work for my new hawk. Walking stick project, phase one. (french hawk by Keith Johnson)

A fun time was had by me.

Thanks, Mike. Actually, two trips (as you might tell by the different shirts in the pics.) Here's a second, more successful fire build.

Also, some riders happened by the second day.

Nice stuff John. Was that some of that Osage never too sharp gave you. Where was the first place you were at? Doug

Yep, that's the Osage alright! It takes a spark every time (so far.) I filled a Sucrets tin with it, threw it in my woods walking kit. The first pics are from the west end of Northampton park. The other pics are from another area of the same park.

great pics John... nice selection of cutting tools too...:) i love the colors this time of year...

Sweet! You know, since moving to the desert I have learned to love it but I still miss the woods where I grew up. Man, those pictures do take me back. Thank you, they are much appreciated!

Great pics buddy, always good to test your skills in bad conditions....great stuff !!!

Good stuff. One of my favorite things about hiking in the colder months is getting that fire going for that hot cup coffee, chocolate, or Tea.

Nice looking Hawk by the way!

I forgot about North Hampton park, it has been a while since I have been in that area. Put aside some time for your project you wanted done soon I am just about moved, and have started getting set back up. Take care. Doug

Glad you're all moved in Doug. I think I'll wait until after Thanksgiving, then give you a call about that knife project.

Wow! That hawk looks amazing, really crisp utilitarian pattern. The "beard" must make it easy to choke up and use it as a ulu no?
