Walking stick balance point

I never thought of my hiking stick in those terms .Actually it's an old Sandvik ski pole who's basket is gone . Sized for me , nice rubber handle ,carbide tip.
For a walking cane i use the Kabar defensive cane , cut to 38" nothing else .

So others know there is a proper why to use trekking poles to gain their benefit (pics below shamelessly hyperlinked from elsewhere on the net).

Great info for anyone using poles. Same goes for skiing. If you fall over your poles while having the leash as shown in the NO picture... you risk wrist injury. Also, the propper way to hold it, will allow you to transfer a greater load on the pole whithout squezzing your hand too much.

I think that the trekking poles are a much better idea because it lets you adjust the length of it on the go. Going uphill, make it shorter so you can move forward your pole without getting unbalanced. Make them longer when goind downhill so you can put them in front of you further. Also, when making a traverse on a step snow slope you can make one longer and one shorter.

I think they beat the walking stick anytime... unless we consider self defense. Where a heavier, stouter stick could help.

That's half the reason I'd carry a walking stick in the first place, at least when I'm not on our land & can't carry a gun.
