Walking Stick thread!

I make them all the time. Nothing fancy just good sturdy sticks, This one is a couple years old, I use the rubber cane or chair leg tips because they have much better traction on rocks and last several years. I have dozens of them in the garage, I have to use one anytime I walk off road, Bad foot.

the rubber tips are nice for around the city and the pointed stainless steel tips are great for the trail.

cheers

Holy crap - I can't believe I missed this thread. That's a sweet walking stick. The metal cap looks perfect on it!

nice work bro

My Right -

I have been working with a torch on my walking sticks. If you move it really fast over the wood - the charred look looks really cool.

I really like a barbed wire look I saw on someone's walking stick lately and really liked it. Carving and burning is in the distance for me as I need to get the fundamentals down first.

Walking sticks rock, no doubt. I have always just picked up what is available, and leave it when I'm done, but I like the concept behind the Pat Crawford modular? Has anyone here used one of his?

Make it when you get there and leave it when you leave - kinda like carry in and carry out

Someone will appreciate it - I guarantee you

I've done that a few times. I didn't do anything fancy to it other than saw the edges clean. I usually leave them at the parking lot. I just recently got interested in bringing some home to make them look nice.

It's been well over a week since I've hit the trail though so I haven't had a chance to get out and look.

A sharp point does much better in a defense situation

This is my favorite hiking staff. Although I have many, bought and made. It is about 5 feet in length. The figure at the top is Slither, the Leave No Trace snake. It goes on all of my cub scout hikes and to most of my pack meetings. All the scouts know that it was not in fact purchased in a gift shop of a local cave, but rather it once belonged to the Great Jungle King, Wopachee (spelling and pronounciation varies from meeting to meeting). Legend is that the king could strike it on the ground causing serpents to fall from the air. The only way to prevent this from happening is if all the boys scream as loud as they can at the sky. So far they have prevented it.

I'm working on one right now. It's a length of Japanese Maple taken out of my back yard. I scored a piece of sceptor quartz at the stone tools show that I'm fitting in the top of the stick.

Here's my favourite hiking staff:

It was made by Bushman5, and I was lucky enough to win it in a give away. It's a beast! It's solid oak with a neat barbed wire design burnt in, scorched rings, and a linseed oil / epoxy finish. I take this on some of my hikes, particularly when there is a risk of encountering stray dogs or other critters.

All the best,

- Mike

That pic of the wire wrap design gave me an idea:

Someone needs to cord wrap their walking stick.
