Walking Sticks?

davide, sorry to hear about your walking dilema. I enjoy making walking sticks and have found thru trial and error that a stick which is approximately 70% of my overall height works well. It seems to work well for others I have made walking sticks for also. If it turns out the stick is not comfortable (too long) I shorten it by 1/2 inch increments till the comfortable length is reached. I drill a hole thru the top end about 5 to 6 inches down and tie a leather lanyard on. If you have a Dremel you can carve a comfortable grip around the lanyard. Put a rubber crutch tip on and your ready to go. I use maple or alder saplings about an inch in diameter to make my walking sticks. Dale H.

While I can't offer much in the way of where to get a walking stick, I will say this. Andrew Jackson used to use an old hickory walking stick, which he used to beat the living tar out of a would-be assassin, had his gun not jammed.

In my dealings with Roger from Mendowood I found a reputable and knowledgeable cane/stick maker with a top flight super strong product.

For an all wood cane I am trying a custom cane from Jerry at Coastaricatreasurehouse.

I just looked up that story: http://www.americanheritage.com/art...ew-jackson-assassination-warren-r-davis.shtml. Andrew Jackson was something else.

Thanks for your support and kind words everyone. I want to clarify that I can actually walk around normal distances just fine. I live in New York and don't have much trouble walking about 20 blocks over the course of a day. I'm interested in something that I can carry when I plan on making more of a hike (urban or otherwise), walking multiple miles in one stretch.

One of my favorite past times used to be taking long walks exploring new areas for hours at a time. The cane would be for having support while doing that.

I used to walk home from 31st and Eighth to 81st and Second every day. Love them midtown Manhattan rush hour crowds :( I only grabbed a walking stick for Central Park or traveling farther afield. :D

Not to go off-topic in my own thread but I know what you mean. In Chinatown and Midtown it can take 5 minutes just to walk one block. Maybe Bloomberg's plan to make the streets around Time Square pedestrian only will alleviate that slightly. You do see some amazing things in those crowds though. The last time I was in Midtown I saw a guy doing three card monte off of a an empty 24 pack of beer. There was a crowd of people waiting to play until his partner signaled to him that cops were coming.

I made some walking sticks the other day. Home Depot sells hardwood replacement handles for various types of tools, such as shop and barn brooms.

The staves can be tipped in various ways. Two of these have the top ends capped with pipe caps. The bottoms are tipped in a couple different ways. One has a smaller pipe cap, and the other is tipped with a small lag screw run into the end. The black one is capped and tipped with copper.

I drilled out holes and lined them with copper and steel tubing. The two natural colored sticks are wrapped with paracord, soaked in superglue.

I like them!

Hiya Andy,

Wish I had seen your handiwork before wasting over $90 on this 'custom' walking cane from Costa Rica Treasure House ...

Handle 5 inches long x 1inch deep x 1 inch wide on a 1 3-8ths diameter shaft.

I am really angry that they could make the handle on an oversize extra strong stick in this way...no craftmanship or brains too evident there ! :thumbdn: :(

I know what I'd like to do with it ...
