All,

I am in search of a good walking stick to use for both hiking and wading while fly fishing. Specifically, I want some type of stick that can be broken down into a shorter package for storage. I have researched and heard a few shop owner's opinions, but I would like to hear more. I looked at Folstaf, but I wasn't as impressed as people made them out to be.

I have heard that most walking sticks cannot withstand much weight. I am a big guy at 300lbs, so strength is important. A few people stated that the majority of wading staffs(William and Joseph, Fishpond, etc.) won't hold that much weight, but I was surprised and skeptical when I heard that. I also looked at a Leki hiking staff, which you could unscrew to shorten. It seemed very solid. I see no reason why a Leki couldn't also be used for wading streams too.

Any thoughts or opinions?

Thanks very much.

you know i have always found ASPEN wood is the good for a true walking stick, hell most woods make a good staff/stick....yeah its not compact but it is the best option imho

I just found these the other day.

I am a big boy too and I don't think I would trust the three piece ones if I ever had to put a lot of weight on it.

I think a solid piece of hardwood would be worth the inconvenience.

I use a 1.2" thick western red oak dowel, soaked in Danish Tung Oil for about two months, to completely permeate and seal the wood. I added a brass tip and expoxy soaked paracord wrap. Will hold more than 300 lbs and is hard to break.

Pat Crawford Survival Stick!!! Easily breaks down, strong enough for me when I was 250#, and still fairly light. A bit pricey but well worth it IMO.

Try the EXTRA STOUT HICKORY HIKING/WALKING STICK w. WHISTLE from

I have one, it is definitely stronger than any oak dowel of the same size you can buy. Also, oak is much stiffer, the hickory has some nice springiness in it.

I discovered these folks about a year ago, and since then I have bought several of their walking sticks.
Great customer service, great sticks and much cheaper than sticks of much lesser quality!

Good luck!
