I am interested in the Wally Hayes video set on making a katana. Has anyone (Experienced maker or newbie) had any success making a katana following the instructions in this video? I have made three knives in my life and would consider myself to be inexperienced, would this video help?

Well, you probably won't make anything as nice as Wally makes, but if you follow his excellent video instructions you are bound to make something way, way better than you would by trial and error.

Great videos,

John

I have Wally's Home knife shop video and it is very informative. I would venture to say the Katana video would be very helpfull aswell. I would start with the home knife shop video if its your first go at knife making then work up to a katana. Start small, think big.

I have seen it a couple times. Its good and easy to follow. I got lost when he does the silk wrapping but for the most part its great. I however didnt make one but now think I can.

An excellent video. I wish I had it before I made my first sword. It would have greatly shortened the learning curve.

I would back the Moose, the basic knife video would be a better place to start. If gives the viewer all the basic's to get started.

SAR and /or Moosemaster,

I Have read the desciption of the Wally Hayes Knifemaking video from Paladin Press. It states that it covers "differential heat treating". Does this mean he is clay coating the blades or just partially quenching the blades?

Yeah he gives a nice demonstration of how to use the clay. He doesnt show how to acid etch to bring out the temper line. But there are a few nice demonstrations on bladeforums on how to do that. Or email me and i can walk you through it.

Think I'll start with the Home Knife Shop video. Walk before you can run, eh!
It's also $10.00 cheaper and still qualifies for free shipping from Paladin Press (even to Canada!!).:D
