I've been through this before with cheap knives- someone talks about how certain brands of $30 knives are so good, specifically mentioning WE and Civivi. I search and there are none at $30, they start at $60. Because of that I was skeptical of your statement so I did a quick check on Amazon, (I had heard of all of those brands before.) I found Ganzo starting at around $20 mostly in 440C, Sanrenmu for similar prices in 8cr13, Petrified Fish were mostly in the $30-60 range and mostly with D2, Kizer starts with D2 at about $30, more for some other steels. I didn't study them but some of them look pretty good in the Amazon thumbnail. When I had the idea to buy something real cheap for hiking so I wouldn't risk losing an expensive knife I had checked some youtubers talking about Amazon sales and found a brand called Flissa. Some of them were under $20 with D2 and looked good in the photos. I don't know Flissa from Ganzo from Civivi, more research would be needed. Camping/hiking season is starting and I'm going to try the orange thing for awhile.

Yeah, we aren't allowed to link or deal spot on Amazon or I'd share some recommendations. An easy way to do it is to search a specific brand and then order the results with price low to high. At least for me, it doesn't always accurately account sale prices in the list order but it does help to find sale items. Kizer, Civivi, and Sencut sometimes go on insane sales. I've scored a few Kizers in N690 or 154CM for $35 that way in the last year or so, usually recently discontinued stuff or old warehouse stock.

BTW, if you like D2, the Petrified Fish 818 is a modern classic at this point. It's still easy to find around $30. They also do one of the better heat treatments on Chinese D2 overall, making their lower-cost models an outstanding bargain. I had mine tested for hardness and edge retention if you want to see. (He generally does all the steels out to 1200 grit at 15dps for even testing. I don't bother going above 600 with D2 and it's all good.)


BTW, I don't love D2 from most companies, including Civivi. Petrified FIsh is the main exception. I feel like Civivi does a lot better with Nitro-V and 14C28N. Civivi and Sencut both do industry-leading heat treatments on 9Cr18Mov. Kubey also does a nice job overall.

^ Yeah that 818 is real nice got one in blue for 23.00 about 2 years ago very nicely made love the g10...
