Walmart Knife Question

Ok we all know Walmart dictates the price they want to pay for a product to it's suppliers. Originally Buck opened a plant in China to meet Walmart's price demand. My question is now that Walmart has Post Falls made knives how is Buck meeting Walmart's cheap price demand? Cheap sheaths instead of leather, clam packs (with all that cheap plastic) instead of nice boxes? Personally I prefer to deal with cutlery/knife shops, but thats just me. Thoughts...

gsea,

The little knife shops still give customer service and want the boxed knives so they can help and talk with their customers. Stores like Walmart want the plastic clam packs so they can be put on a hook in the store and don't have to give any customer service for this type of product as it lowers their overhead. I live in central CA and in our town all of the knife shops have gone the way of the dinosaurs. :(

Wal-mart did announce awhile ago they are going to start investing billions of inventory into USA made over the next few years. I do remember as a kid Wal-mart prided itself in buying american to help build american jobs. Then Sam died and it all went down hill. I havent bought anything from Wal-Mart in 3-4 years, I refuse to shop there. I do wish there was some actual knife stores around me. I have to drive 45 minutes to a fleamarket booth that actually sells real brand knives and not knock offs. Found a hardware near by thats a Case master dealer, its more like a museum and all Case knives. Tools trucks dont carry Buck knives, but I wish they did

I wish the the big box stores would go back to the Box knives...

I got in Trouble for Saying WM on here... 1 point against me or so... BEWARE... and that Sucked ... :(

I did get one Buck 110 from ChinaMart to use so the plastic was junk to me. I do not buy the China made Buck knives period.:thumbdn: All my Buck knives that I buy to collect I get with the boxes.

That's called censorship. Surprised coming from a forum that supports an American icon like Buck and USA made products. So much for the Constitution.

Let me pull up a chair to this table before things get out of hand.

First, if someone has been on BFs but never really read the rules you agreed to when you joined the forum, take some time and go to FAQ at the top of the page and read the rules. BFs is a privately owned company, you may disagree with the whole world but the owner of the forum rules this roost. If you can not live within the liberal boundaries they have established then pack your tent and hike on down the road.

Second, if you wish to cuss and discuss harshly some particular person, thing or company then go to the Good, Bad and Ugly thread, where such activity is allowed. Everywhere else you are expected to act like a nice person. I do not know how ITE got his negative point talking about the Mart but I can say anyone points someone to or away from WM is in violation. You say a bad word about China and you are in trouble also. World and US policy is likely not really a Buck knife subject.

All that said, I think a discussion on Buck moving production to the US, a discussion on the type of knives found in big box stores, the wish for old style customer service stores can be carefully stated. Remember there are more big box stores than just one.

You have to walk a careful line talking about this, even if it is about our changing society, where a few major companies are spreading out pushing mom and pop out of business in almost every moderate sized town. So you folks be careful naming names, naming countries and breaking one of BFs prime rules. Which is "Be Nice."

If there is something or someone on the Buck forum you just gotta cuss you PM me and cuss up a storm, but if you do it in the open you will be in trouble.

300 sorry didn't think I was cussing or discussing harshly any thing and I do apologize if it came off that way. Just was asking about the W knives. Please take the thread down if you wish. Again no harm was meant.

Nope, your good.

But, when someone starts to invoke the Constitution it can get political quickly..........as I stated careful discussion is fine. I have watched Buck knife displays disappear from small Midwestern stores. A few in my neck of the woods hold on to Case displays but most just sell cheaper throw away overseas made knives. I think some of it is because a large portion of the population doesn't know how to actually sharpen a knife. My rancher brother-in-laws use whatever the feed store sells by the dozen.

I agree with you, though it is getting harder and harder to find shops nowadays. You can barely find a place if you want to handle a blade first!

I saw a 50th 110 at a Walmart yesterday - it was clamshell/packaged with the nylon sheath. Guess the sheath must be the major cost-cutting item as it is the same knife. I decided to pass until I find one with a leather sheath. OH

As far as construction, that nylon/cordoura sheath is a nice sheath - strong and durable. Go ahead and buy the knife that comes with the nylon sheath and buy a leather sheath for it for under 5-bucks.

Under $5!? For a 112 sheath too? I'd like to pick up a leather sheath for my 422. Can you please PM me the place to get 'em for that price? Thanks!

Alright Ed, I took your word for it and I bought a 50th Anniversary Buck 110 today at the MART-MART store and you are right - the nylon sheath is a good, stout one (very similar to a 1902-2002 Buck Anniversary 450 sheath I have) but NOT at all like the junky nylon sheath that came with my 2005 Buck 110 Commemorative Set. OH
Ps I found that you can indeed check blade centering even in a Clam-Shell package - just look down the side of the plastic - they had two - one nicely centered and one with the blade too close to the brass liner.

The issue that I see at all of the retail outlets that I visit is that Buck knives increasingly have less real estate. My local Walmart is stocking only 3 models: the 110, a stockman and bare handled fixed blade.

A whole lot of gerbers and leatherman.

Don't know if Buck started some off shore production strictly to meet a specific retailers price point or not? What I do know is that the one mentioned above has always carried the Buck 110 and 119 as well as the new Slimline and a couple other Buck models that have never been made any where but the U.S of A so I'm curious as to what you mean when you write, "now that Walmart has Post Falls made knives"?

My ChinaMart has two China Buck Knives and one Idaho Buck 110.

What I saw yesterday at the one I went to was two Buck 110 50th Anniversary knives (USA of course), a "China Buck" blister package containing two pocketknives for one price (373 & 379), and a USA made Slimline - also in a blister package. Additionally, all are now housed in a locked, glass case - no longer on accessible pegs. OH

The box store here has 110s (USA) and China Bucks only!!! You do the math. As with all things it comes down to profit, it is called capitalism what are you going to do? Caevat emptor.
