FWIW...
With all the talk lately about Walmart etc...I took a pic with my phone today while there.

My local Super Walmart is one of the newly designed stores they just switched over to....no more knife cabinet, just blister packed items on a rack.

This is their entire selection...

Note: I had to morph two pics together to make it into one.

For the average person that would cover the bases pretty well, Of course some of us are not average.

I think by doing away with the cabinet, walmarts shrinkage will be alot higher, no way for them to safeguard against mall ninjas leaving piles of empty blister packs in the stores corners! anyway, how many of those knives pictured are of foreign manufacter?

I agree...I remember years ago when I went to go buy myself a knife I just went to the local K-Mart & bought what I thought was a great knife...it was a cheap $20 folder with a sheath(Rigid brand I believe??)...but not being into knives at the time, I was totally happy with it...I really thought at the time it was a top quality knife...how things have changed since then:)

Knife selection at Wal-Mart is a joke.

If you're incredibly lucky you might find a Kershaw or two. Once in a blue moon you'll find a Spyderco.

I noticed that all of the knives were on the pegs with that lock thing on it...so no just walking away with it...sorry mall ninjas:D
And yes, there was a lot of China made stuff.

The racks that hold the plastic packs are controlled via a magnet, which they believe cuts down on theft as you need a employee to release it. That said, I have seen many packs slit open and the knife gone, or the top loop cut off releasing the package. I could not find a worker for ten minutes and cut the top loop myself to buy a Kershaw and paid for it at the front register.

I'm drooling.

My Walmart has twice as many Kershaws and half the Gerbers, and it's a decent selection.
Of course all the Gerbers are china made, "440 surgical stainless" garbage, along with the other garbage that I can't remembers, but the Kershaw selection is nice, especially when you have someone visiting who doesn't own a quality knife and you can replace their POS with a Skyline or Od-1 so you don't have to worry about them hurting themselves due to an extremely low quality lock.

trust me, I worked for walmart, I had to go around and collect empty packages of alot of products, they will not like the results of the blister packs, if you really want to know why they are doing this, it is to downsize the amount of workers, hell just look at the registers, on average there are what 40? with 20 self serve and only 5 maybe 6 cashiers at any given time, sam walton is rolling in his grave!

That photo just makes me want to goto Wal-Mart and buy a knife.

Such a nice big selection of hgh quality blades they have. :jerkit:

I just love it when I see knives in blister packs, it just screams high quality. :thumbdn:

The Kershaws in blister packs are high quality, the blister packs just make it easier for te retailer. Those Gerbers: garbage, the Buck 110 and Kershaws, they are great knives.

Blister packs are also garbage.

People shouldn't go to Wal-Mart to buy knives, go to a true sporting goods store like Cabela's or Jay's.

IMO their selection is not a joke Josh. Although it's true that many of your favorite brands are not represented, as a knife community, the exposure we get in the 4000+ stores is beneficial for the community as a whole.
Sometimes it's best to look past the fact that your brand of choice is not available, and try to see the bigger overall picture.

In truth, we should feel fortunate that there is even a section for knives at all, as knives in general barely qualify in having any presence, in any big box store(s). What knives are is an accessory, we're barely relevant, we should all try to remember that.

We service 6 made in the US models in Wal-Mart, that a ton of people now carry. Potentially, without us being represented, those folks may not even be carrying a knife at all. That can never be a bad thing.

I'll say this, as a community, we need all the exposure we can get.

The Wal-Mart business generates revenue that assists in our future and overall daily health.

So joke, no I can't see that at all.

right on point.

leeks, zings, skylines, blurs; these are some of the knifes many here own, given props on and sold at walmart; those are jokes?

buck 110's, and leatherman's; time tested and desired tools; these are jokes?

please.

my two local walmarts got rid of their entire knife selection. and one of them just went to the super walmart, so you'd think they'd have something there.

I heard they are going to start stocking some RAT cutlery knives...

Also in 2012, you should start seeing some Chris Reeves in there too!

:p

I got a couple of Kershaws for my friends from Walmart. They are really nice knives for the price and better than what they have had before. If you go to walmart looking for top-of-the-line anything, you will most likely be disappointed. Although, if Kershaw wants to put a Volt or two in my store, I sure as heck won't complain!

Eventually all knives, except customs, will be made in China. Even Kershaw and Buck make knives there now. And chances are good that many of us on this board own one or two Chinese made knives.

Sad but probably true!
