Well at least in my part of Ohio. I've been to 2 Wally worlds over the past couple of days and both had a nice collection of both rifles and shotguns. Has any one else notice this new trend?

They stopped selling them?

I don't know, I try not to buy anything that can blow up in my face and kill me at Walmart.

Huh?? Are you referring to guns in general, or something specific related to Walmart?

To the OP... I didn't realize Walmart even stopped in the first place.

BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Wal-Mart Stores Inc. has decided to stop selling guns in about a third of its U.S. stores in what it calls a marketing decision based on lack of demand in some places, a company spokeswoman said Friday.

The world’s largest retailer decided last month to remove firearms from about 1,000 stores in favor of stocking other sporting goods, in line with a “Store of the Community” strategy for boosting sales by paying closer attention to local differences in demand.

“This decision is based on diminished customer relevancy and demand in these markets,” said Wal-Mart spokeswoman Jolanda Stewart.

Hunting and shooting advocates said it was a surprise that Wal-Mart, which has a strong hunting and fishing tradition, would surrender the field in at least some areas to big-box outfitting stores like Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s.

I don't think Remington, Mossberg, Savage and the rest of them would sell a sub-standard firearm anywhere. The firearms sold at Wal Mart come of the same assembly line and are of the same quality as those sold at any other retailer. Just like the Buck knives, Mag-Lite Flash lights or anything else made by a reputable manufacturer that might be sold there.

There is a new Wal Mart opening here next month. With it being close to Detroit and in a suburban area I don't suspect they'll be selling any there.

Interestingly enough, there are no handguns at the few Walmarts in my area. You can buy ammof or almost anything hunting rifle, handgun, and shotgum though.

I hate Wal-Mart, them selling guns again does not change that in the least.

Hey there doctor peper soda are really good price. where you going to go to get it at there price?? please tell me so I can go and see for my self. thank you.

I worked in management at Wal-Mart about 10 years ago, for several years. I was sporting goods manager for a year. The guns sold there come from the same suppliers that 99% of gun dealers use, Sports South and Lipsey's. Just like at Dick's, Bass Pro, etc, Wal-Mart will have special runs that are exclusively available there. For years, it was the ONLY store you could by Weatherby Vanguard rifles at.

As far as I am aware, no stores ever really carried handguns in stock. We had no display space allocated for them. We had to special order them upon customer request. I usually had a couple of hot sellers stored in the firearm stock room to show customers.

How good your local store's sporting goods department really is depends on the store management. If the store has a department manager or store manager that's an outdoors person, then the sporting goods area tends to be good. Each store has a departmental plan for their store that doesn't allow much flexibility, but a good manager can make it work.

Here's an example: The stores a couple of miles away from my house SUCK ASS in all ways. They don't have much of a selection at all. They are always out of stock on stuff they do carry. No offense to the females on here, but all three of those stores have women for the sporting goods manager. You can tell they aren't interested in the stuff at all, but they've got no other department to manage. Conversely, a store about 40 miles away is fabulous. The store manager is a hunter, and the guys working the sporting goods are all avid hunters and fisherman.

Everyone wants to hate on Wal-Mart, but the reason that they are how they are is because that's what customers want. Everyone wants stuff for the cheapest price possible. All they did was answer the demand.

None of the Mal-Wart's around me have guns of any kind and have even removed their knife counters.
No Buck, Kershaw, Spyderco, Leatherman, Gerber, nothing. A few ultra-cheap junk folders in clam shells on the racks is all.

The STORY I heard was big time non-compliance with record completion in CA and caught heavy fines. I'm in W Central FL where they no longer sell guns unless resumed in last week or so, they had labor intensive record completion procedures including using templates, then a management employee had to be called to verify each completion on the paperwork including actual serial number on the firearm. After the sale was rung up, they walked the boxed firearm to the door and handed it to you outside.

Now while as this was going on no one was helping all the other Sporting Goods Department customers that were standing around.

I can order a firearm by telephone or walk into my dealers, complete the paperwork, have the authorization call made [ if a handgun], pay and leave with my purchase in hand in 10 minutes or so.

I felt sorry for Wal-Mart in that many of their Sporting Goods Dept guys/gal were not knowledgeable about firearms in general, much less sales of same.

I bought three(3) centerfire rifles, one special order, over three years or so...still a satisfied Wal-Mart customer and still buying guns..elsewhere.

The template came about because there were several issues with managers checking paperwork. At my local store, a couple of years ago, there was an instance where a person bought a Rem 870, filled out the paperwork, marked on it that they had mental issues, took the gun home and committed suicide. The store nearly lost their FFL. A new manager had taken care of the paperwork and overlooked the mental issue.

Whether a store sells guns or not depends on how many guns they averaged for 2005 and previous years (the changes took place in 2006). IIRC, a store had to average at least 300 firearms a year to keep the program. That would be 6 guns a week.

When I ran sporting goods I averaged 30-35 firearms a week. But, I am a gun and knife nut and really enjoyed what I was doing. Before I took it over, they averaged less than 10 a week.

It's just my personal frustration with the way Walmart always has everything you want, EXCEPT for the one thing that you need. :p

The only walmart stores that sell handguns, are in Alaska. Why would they sell guns in states that hate guns, and hassle the people who do? Then again, why would anyone live in such a state?

All I can say Chris ....."GO BUCKS" nothing like that ever happens in Ohio (ha ha)

As far as I'm aware, they never even stopped where I live. (South Louisiana).

They have decent deals on guns/ammo. (I'd say they are the cheapest place to buy ammo from). For a box of 20-25 rounds the local gunshop will charge $5-10 more then Walmart.

And they used to sell a Rifle (Remington)/Scope combo for only $270, in .308, .270 and 06 I believe. I doubt if you'll see that kind of deal anywhere else.

I don't go into Walmart often though. If I need outdoors gear I prefer Academy.

Sounds like it depends on the state and sale profits. At my walmart they've had rifle/shottys as long as I can remember.

Not everyone.

I hate the place, I hate cheap crap, and I hate dirty white trash shopping in their pajamas. Therefore I don't go there.
