Walmart selling guns again

Interestingly enough, there are no handguns at the few Walmarts in my area. You can buy ammof or almost anything hunting rifle, handgun, and shotgum though.

I do remember a time when they did sell them.
From what I heard and that is not to say it is true, they stopped selling them because one of the stores (in TN IIRC) had a underage clerk sell a handgun to a underage person. On top of that they just dropped it in a bag and let him walk out.
Wal Mart stopped selling handguns after this as they were hit with some very heavy fines.

Most of the stores that they stopped selling them were in the Northeastern states.--KV

I never knew they sold handguns, apparently this must have been regional also.

They used to have a great selection of rifles / shotguns in the store I shop at ( Kingston NY) , but they stopped selling guns there a few years ago.

There's a Gander Mountain store nearby and I liked shopping there because the long guns were left in racks at floor level. They were cable locked to the rack but the customer could still handle / closely examine the guns without asking for help. But they recently changed that and put everything behind a counter. That and the fact that they seem to have stopped carrying Mil-Surps has caused me to have no desire to go there ( same with WalMart - no incentive)

The two Walmarts around me are still the same. One sells them and one doesn't. Although I never really looked at guns there, as the employers aren't very smart.

"Although I never really looked at guns there, as the employers aren't very smart." Yea "customer needs help in sporting goods" and the help comes from the guy in the paint dept. doesn't comfort me much.

I worked in management at Wal-Mart about 10 years ago, for several years. I was sporting goods manager for a year. The guns sold there come from the same suppliers that 99% of gun dealers use, Sports South and Lipsey's. Just like at Dick's, Bass Pro, etc, Wal-Mart will have special runs that are exclusively available there. For years, it was the ONLY store you could by Weatherby Vanguard rifles at.

As far as I am aware, no stores ever really carried handguns in stock. We had no display space allocated for them. We had to special order them upon customer request. I usually had a couple of hot sellers stored in the firearm stock room to show customers.

How good your local store's sporting goods department really is depends on the store management. If the store has a department manager or store manager that's an outdoors person, then the sporting goods area tends to be good. Each store has a departmental plan for their store that doesn't allow much flexibility, but a good manager can make it work.

Here's an example: The stores a couple of miles away from my house SUCK ASS in all ways. They don't have much of a selection at all. They are always out of stock on stuff they do carry. No offense to the females on here, but all three of those stores have women for the sporting goods manager. You can tell they aren't interested in the stuff at all, but they've got no other department to manage. Conversely, a store about 40 miles away is fabulous. The store manager is a hunter, and the guys working the sporting goods are all avid hunters and fisherman.

Everyone wants to hate on Wal-Mart, but the reason that they are how they are is because that's what customers want. Everyone wants stuff for the cheapest price possible. All they did was answer the demand.

Was the Ruger 10/22 with the longer stainless barrel a special run exclusively sold at Walmart?

Thats the only place I seen them sold. I don't see them anymore, wished I would have bought one years ago.

Yeah,I stood and heard a young clerk tell a customer that you could tell did not know much about firearms that a 5 shot 30/06 was single shot.I did correct him on that.

I have not noticed them in the last year or so.
If I see one I think I will grab it.

I agree. Wal-Mart was once a mom + pop place just like all the places they are running out. Didn't they do what every other small business wants to do? It just so happens they build them every-damn-where and since the place is so cheap.. alot of "special folks" shop there. I got no beef with them though

And as far as I can remember they have always sold rifles/shottys, atleast at my local wally world in central FL

I was stationed at Fort Bliss Texas for three years and they had some Walmarts in El Paso that sold guns and some that did not, I was told by a walmart employee that within a few years they would stop nation wide but she may have been full of it too!

I would disagree somewhat,I liked Wal Mart before Sam Walton died. After his death is when Wal Mart turned into what it is now.I think the corporate monster took over and no one could get it back in the box.
Sam Walton was always looking for American goods to sell, that stopped as soon as he passed away.

Very true.. Wal-mart is like this massive neccessary evil in my opinion. They provide cheap goods and jobs to poorer areas, but how they go about doing it is another thing. I still shop there when I'm back in the states, not for everything but it is cheap.
