I am finishing up this knife and had a few questions. I have never buffed ivory before. I used a brown tripoli and it seemed to work ok. Is there a better compound for ivory?
Here is a few specs.
Fossil Walrus Ivory handle 4.25 inches long
Blade is Deker's Micro W's damascus 5.125 inches long
Guard is HHH explosion damascus with a matching spacer, both are textured.

That Ivory is gorgeous Mike. Knife ain't half bad either. ;)
I can't help with the ivory but I have something that has been bugging me, your maker's mark. To me it's a little on the large side and distract from knife. Maybe it's not your name as much as the location that would look better a little smaller I think. I even did away from location altogether myself.

So what'cha gonna carve into that handle? ;)

Thanks Patrice :) I actually ordered a new logo, but this one was done a few months ago. It has been an in between project's knife, so it has been pushed to the back burner a few times lol. My new knives will have a much smaller logo. It bugs me too, but it is what i had at the time lol. As far as carving...I had actually thought about carving the butt of the handle with a flower or something...Not sure yet.

Mike, white compound on the slow "buffer" that we talked about worked fine for me.

*jedi's powers on* You want to carve the butt of the handle with a flower or something *jedi's powers off*

:D

Kidding aside I think it is a must Mike considering your artistic background. It will definitely take it to the OMG level.

Looking slick Mike, can we get a close up or details on that spacer below the guard?

If you're using a patrial tang that isn't going to be peened with a but plate or soldered to a guard, are you planning to put a pin through or is it just going to be held on by epoxy?

Thanks for the kind words guys! I had to make a knife to see if i remembered how to do anything besides kitchen stuff lol. As of right now, i am designing what i want to carve into the end of the handle. As far as the tang, it is all but 1 inch of the length of the handle, serrated and held in with epoxy...I am debating the pin...Scared as hell to drill it lol. I just got home from hell day at work and am going to sit down and draw a few options for the butt cap carving...Will get pics up in a few and see what you guys think is best :)

Oh, i have to give a big thanks to Deker and Randy at HHH for their awesome damascus, and to Stacy for the awesome ivory!!!! You guys rock!!!!

Unless some rube is going to drop lots of money and then try to baton the knife through some knotty pine with a top maul, I think that you are okay with what you have now.

I am looking for input, what do you guys think?

They look good Mike but I was thinking more of a 3 dimensional carving of a potion of the butt that could be seen from he side. Probably wood t ry somehing inspired from the pattern in he Damascus of the guard.

Ok fine, you talked me into it :) New pics up later.

Very, Very nice Mike.. I like the one you did a close up photo the best of what you posted. But I think as Patrice said something to compliment the Damascus pattern would be cool. Maybe even something on the end and a ring around the butt so that you can see carving from the side.
