Karen and I decided that on this vacation we would set no schedule and move from point to point as felt appropriate. I have a lot of family that I haven't seen for awhile in Texas, so part of our trip was devoted to catching up on visiting with my relatives. Beyond that we just wanted to explore the state and stop anyplace that looked interesting. We spent several days in Kerrville enjoying the beautiful Texas hill country, the Guadalupe, the restaurants and the extensive art community that has developed there during the last decade or so.

Large spineless prickly pear were used to decorate many of the art galleries:

Karen was really in her element in Kerrville:

Only in Texas would you find a gun store next door to an art gallery:

Karen clowned around with the pink flamingos:

Large agave were in abundance:

This guy produced some really great bronzes:

I addition to the galleries, there were a number of antique stores:

We bought a tiffany floor lamp at "Judith's":

We also visited Stonehenge while in Kerrville. No kidding. :D

Ahh, my favorite wood carving subject. This is a replica of a maoi from Easter Island:

Good vacation. Try Kerrville sometime.

Glad you liked the Texas Hill Country. It is easily the most beautiful part of the state. In addition to great shopping and hiking, there are 10-12 wineries around the Fredericksburg/Llano/Kerrville area that make really good wine.

We'll have to tour the wineries next time. ;)

That is my idea of a trip. Me and my wife do the same stuff while on vacation, I dont leave to eat at the same places we have, and shop at the same stores we have.

My wife would love that place, she is an artist too.

Nice score on that lamp, its gorgeous, Hope it made the trip ok.

That agave is freakin huge!!

Some of my favorite vacations have been the ones that entailed the least amount of planning. I need to remember that. The sense of freedom that comes with lack of an itinerary is the key element.

I agree 100% I like to not feel in a rush, and to stop anywhere I want w/o worryin bout schedule.

Looks like fun, HDW!

I agree, somtimes trips thsat just take you to a general area withouit planning allows for the greatest thrills from spontaneous discoveries.

Yep. Who'da thunk we'd find Stonehenge. :D

Actually, we were reluctant to ask directions because we thought the guy who told us about it might be putting us on. "Excuse me sir, could you tell me how to get to Stonehenge?" "Uh, that's in England isn't it?" :p

Kerrville can be a great place to visit.
Glad you enjoyed it.
Thanks for posting the pics!

And, a gunsmith next to an art shop is like having jewelry and candles at a gun show... its a couples thing.

Road trips are great fun. They aren't always the most economical of vacations if you choose to stay in hotels and don't always get good deals on last minute bookings, but I agree that the spontaneity of it all is immensly fun! Thanks for the report!

You bet kgd. Another thing I did years ago and may repeat in the future is to take an open schedule camping/backpacking vacation. Since I'm retired now I wouldn't even have to worry about how much vacation time I was using.
