Wandering Around In The Weeds

Being from PA orginally, ticks were unheard of there in the woods. Now they are common place in PA and nearly as bad as the SE forests. So, who knows, maybe they may survive in northern MI. My bet.... they will be there.

Back a few years (like 8 yrs), I finally stepped into the realm of auto focus digital 35mm SLR cameras. Had a cheap point & shoot digital ($100ish). Sounds stupid really now, but I was a diehard 35mm film person and often carried two camera bodies, lenses, and large tripod in the woods for years. I was always a "Nikon guy", but when I went to choose a 35mm DSLR, I went with Sony. Have two bodies now and an assortment of lenses that I usually need for the outdoor stuff. Enjoy it a lot. I like the southern forests a lot too except for the damn ticks. The first Sony was bought for work (and is great and still ticking) and the second was better and a backup for work stuff as well as personal pursuits.

I see insect here now, that as a kid I only saw further south, so I'm sure they will be in Michigan, and maybe some parts already. But in the year I was up there I stayed in the woods a lot. I saw lots of ants, and billions of mosquitoes, but not one tick. I didn't complain about that :)

As a kid I started with 110s, and then 35mm, but before I could get too seriously involved with it my father complained a lot about the development costs versus the number of photos kept in the initial phases. So, I switched to pen and ink, rapidograph, and sketching for my artistic outlet, and later woodworking. But when digital cameras came along, I was back to photography. I went through a few point & shoot cameras, and still have a Canon p&s I gave $450 for about 6 years ago. The next 3 after that have all been Nikon DSLRs. I went with Nikon because friends that are war journalists pointed out the tough body Nikons cost less that the tough body Canon models. I like a lot of the photos I see shot with other brands of cameras, but at this point I have enough invested in lenses that I'll stick with Nikon I imagine. The DSLRs have all paid for themselves multiple times.

Nice pics brother!

Thanks bro, glad you liked the post!

I checked out your two Fiddleback Forge knives at Blade. I like them. That is the first time that I really looked at their knives. I believe I will end up getting one of their handmade "production" knives. I like how they distinguish between their customs and the handmade from bar steel production knives.

False Solomon's Seal tends to be smaller (plant size) than regular Solomon's Seal. It is one of my early wild plants along with Jack in the Pulpit that I identified in the moist woods. I have Solomon's Seal growing in a shady bed at my home.

good stuff, brian! i like that idea of showing different stages of growth.

Last year the spread of ticks was enormous ,to many places that never saw ticks. With them comes Lyme disease !! PA center for tick study is in Pike Co the worst area [NE corner of the state] Lyme is almost epidemic in scale in many places .Learn about it and take precautions !!!
