Wandering New Woods

Great pics Mist! The UP is one of my favorite places to get away and explore. Heading to the Porkies in a few weeks.

How does your wife feel about snow?

Great pics Mist -

I grew up there (northern LP) and you're in for a treat this fall. I'd recommend MI-31 north from Muskegon up to M-22 and on up to Leland/Leelanau. The colors and lakeshore vista's are amazing.

Yeah, that area is beautiful. Me and the misses drive over to Empire quite often in the summer to enjoy Lake Michigan. We are about an hour away!

I'd love to visit Michigan this time of year, the short window between bugs and snow. :D

I have a very specific reason for wanting to visit, my ancestors settled in the Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes area, now a National Park. Haven't been there since I was a kid, over 30 years ago.

Thanks man, I am looking forward to all of the exploring! Well, she isn't crazy about it, but damn I couldn't get her outside in the winter back in TN so I really don't see the difference ;)

Thank you, I'll definitely have to head over that way soon then!

Mist, you have good cold weather gear? Maybe some decent snoeshoes? The weather can make for some wonderful solitude if you are setup well.

Nice photos mistwalker. I'm glad that you're enjoying MI. There are some great suggestions for road trips in this thread. Hope your first one is to our Gathering in a couple of weeks.

I do not as of yet, but is definitely on the agenda :) May need to research making snow shoes :D

Definitely hoping to make my way to that gathering, at least for a day!

whoa! i had no idea you moved, brian. excellent pics as always! was wondering where'd you go since all i've seen lately are your fiddleback knives/threads over there.

i gotta say i'm looking forward to your winter/snow on the ground trip reports...it's a whole other environment for sure.

Those look like wild cherries to me, don't trust me though.

Dogwood berries?

All best guesses. I'd be curious what they are though.

Oh, and looks like a nice trip Mist!

Yep, was handed a good opportunity to get the heck out of the city and back out into the country and jumped on the deal. The new Recluse was one I got from Andy since I will be getting back into hunting. Most of my bushcraft and tactical knives are a bit pointy to do well at skinning :) I had a lot on my plate so it took a while to get out and about and learn the woods in the area. Definitely a new environment. Just glad the house is well insulated and we have a gas stove, gas heat, and a big tank full of LP :) I'm looking forward to doing it again, but from a different perspective. Last time I wandered this far north I was still in my mid teens, had no clue about the environment, and the winter damned near killed me. This time I'm not a wandering stranger in a strange land

Thanks man, I'm still researching :)

Great pics as usual! That MK-22 is a BEAUT!

Thanks man! Yep the Martin MK-22, or Martin Rio as it was finally named, is sweet and one of my favorite knives. I am thinking about the same knife but with just the bras hilt and no protruding guard, and minus the choil...a lot like a smaller version of Ed's T-3 SERE design. The Martin's make great knives. I have four of their knives and really like all of them.

I've not been lurking around of late, but its good to see some of your pictures when looking back in on you guys.
It certainly looks like you have a great new playground to go out and explore.

Best wishes for you and your family in the new digs and so on.
Whether its permanent or not, enjoy.

All the best

Hello Scruff, how have you been? Thank you, everyone is liking it so far. I've had a lot going on, so not around as much lately myself, Definitely lot to learn about this area. The little one has been enjoying helping me gather tinder and shelter materials for a class for a local hunting club, so we have been having fun together.

Oh not so bad, a lot of work and not much play unfortunately, but that's how it goes sometimes.
Looking forward to the cooler weather here....but I think your winter could be a tad chillier than mine!

So pleased to hear you and the cub are getting to enjoy the locale together. I bet she has taken no time to adjust to her new playground. Hope there are plenty of rocks for her to hop around on.

Good luck with the plant I.D. and the course

I believe the red berries on the tree is "Winterberry" which is in the holly family. The one with the whitish material above the berry is Strawberry Bush. The red berry low to the ground is "Partridge Berry" I believe which you can find in TN. There are also tea berries that are good to eat that grow in northern forests. They are ripe in the fall and have a teaberry gum smell and flavor. I used to chew on the leaves a lot during small game season.
