Thought I’d share a few photos taken from a recent vacation in The Great Smokey Mountains National Forest.

It’s a very large Forest with a LOT of trails.

It was mainly a series of day hikes in different locations so I was mostly traveling light, my walking stick and a couple of sharps, with a few other pieces of kit; compass, ferro rod, and a couple of small lights in my pockets and around my neck and in a shoulder bag. The Fiddleback Hiking Buddy was the main knife on most of the hikes, but I switched to my old RC-3MIL once when I was walking down the middle of a stream. I found the larger mirror on the new compass to be a great help for safely removing all of the suicidal gnats that kept flying into my eyes.

There are several large streams and small rivers.

I like how the Nalgene Guyot works well for well for improvised pre-filtering water before treating.

The streams were great places to test some of my kit.

The humidity was so high that even in the shade of the canopy I was constantly soaked with sweat.

That is a beautiful area! I absolutely love me some Smokies. We take a trip there every spring and fall. Great pics!!

nice pics! i grew up in north AL so i've been there a couple dozen times or more. it sure is a beautiful area. i just remember the last couple times we were there (early 90s), their being just way to many folks around. oh well, what can you do?
that pic of the bear is a hoot. nice work...

Great critter and landscape pictures Mistwalker. A fine looking area to be wondering through I think. Thanks for sharing!

Great pics ! I was there a few weeks ago ! I love the Smokies, wish I had more time to spend there !

The Smokies are a wonderful place. Can't wait to get down there again. Have yet to see a bear, but it's not for lack of trying on my part, but I can't say the same about my sister when we go ;)

Wow nice pics. I've never walked up on a sleeping bear. Although they are in my back yard once in a while.

Nice set of photos
Glad you enjoyed yourself

Brings back sweet memories of a two week backpacking trip in the Smokies in 77

I like the stream shots. On a hot day like that, they would be a good place to stop for a while and soak the feet.

Thanks guys, I'm glad you enjoyed the photos!

as always man great pics and write up. looks like you had a great time.

how close were you to that bear lol.

It was a great time, and I reckon I was about 35-40 meters maybe a little more. Hard to say really, I was on the side of a hill a bit above the bear.

Great pics! Only made it up there once this year, and wasn't in picture taking mode-so I'll look at yours!

Thanks man, glad you liked them.

Very nice Brian. I miss that place, even though it hasn't been that long for us.

B

Thanks Brian, glad you enjoyed the photos. Even though it's only a couple of hours away it's been a long time since I was there. I don't like hiking in crowded woods all that much but I was able to find some trails less traveled.

Was just reading the "Why Are You Here" piece you wrote in Self Reliance Illustrated a few days back. I really enjoyed that a lot. Oh, and glad to see Off The Map is still around too. I was afraid you were going to stop making knives there for a while.
