Wandering Through The Smokies

I don't like hiking in crowded woods all that much but I was able to find some trails less traveled.

I for sure hear you there. I used to avoid heavily traveled places. But, they are generally heavily traveled because they tend to be gorgeous :) Sometimes if you change what you are after, even crowded woods can be fun.

Was just reading the "Why Are You Here" piece you wrote in Self Reliance Illustrated a few days back. I really enjoyed that a lot.

Thanks for the feedback. I wasn't quite sure what they would do with that article (whether they would use it or not). It is not your typical article and I wrote it with the mindset that I was writing it for me. If they used it, they did, if not then I was cool with that too. I am sure many will skip it, but I liked it myself ;)

Oh I know, and I understand that. I still take the family to those places, like the falls at fall creek and what have you just for the views, But when I'm alone and looking for good wildlife shots then less traveled trails usually work better for me.

You're right of course, it's not the usual and that was a lot of the appeal to it for me, I like those rare gems. I also thought you did a great job of expressing those thoughts and giving them life. To those who skip it I can only say that it's their loss.

Enjoyed your pictures very much- the Smokies are one of our favorite places! It was sad to see the ghosts of the hemlock trees in a couple of your photos, though. First the chestnuts, then the Fraser firs, now the hemlocks... Sad to see what we do to our own forests sometimes.

Great photo's as usuall Brian! My wife volunteered me for our church sponsored youth trip up to Gatlinburg, TN at the end of the month doing some work around the parks...I'm looking forward to it now:D

Thanks Rock, you should like it up there, as soon as you head out of Gatlinburg into the Smokeys there is no cellular signal :)

Yeah, it's something that is coming out in the October batch of new gear I think.

Razor...lol, I haven't shaved in 8 years :)

My wife loves Gulf Shores - I love The Smokies. Any vacation this autumn, our usual time for such, seems doubtful now. Your photos brought back great memories - thank you for that! I miss the perspiration - the different foilage - including new 'leaves of three' to avoid! Neat bear - my favorite picture was of a large blackie with a collar and radio - near Cade's Cove. My youngest son, 8 or 9 then - 37 now, said, "Daddy, that bear has his own boombox!". Great memories - even when I severely twisted an ankle while trail camping with my sons. Still one of my favorite hikes, even if cut short to just three days (My ankle was severely swollen!) - and I smiled from ear to ear on the way out, despite the 'agony'! Blame it on my deprived early childhood - in Brooklyn. Trees were either surrounded by concrete, like our brownstone's backyard or front sidewalk, or, in Prospect Park, by drunks, bodies, etc. Seriously, thanks for bringing that back into my ready memory!

Thanks man, I'm really glad you enjoyed the photos.

I love the gulf coast in the late autumn and winter but not so much in the summer.
