Off Topic Wanna have a laugh? Arm chair blacksmiths decrying "fake" damascus

Well when you start out at the age of 10 and you spend your life(don't know his age)working with someone that has the knowledge to pass down plus his own creative ability I can understand his passion and what ART!!!! WOW mythical perhaps not:eek::eek::eek:

That was meant as a compliment in a humorous way.

Facebook is rife with it. I can't believe even the amount of misinformation that exists even on smithing groups. It's even worse outside of them. Every one with access to YouTube and forum archives is an expert

It`s the new rage. Folks love to weigh in on others real accomplishments vs. their imagined ones.

IE: That`s not X type of metal because they didn`t do Y and Z during processing; if I was doing I would have done it like this and on and on.

Funny, the original pattern weld blade mentioned on Reddit there... a student of mine showed that to me weeks ago, they were talking about it in some newbie FB group, and arguing over there about whether it was real. Maybe the fight had spilled over from Reddit, IDK. I was like "yep, that's real, guys make that pattern- it's basketweave mosaic, and apparently accordion folded out." I directed him to a Bruce Bump WIP of basketmascus to see the process.
But DAMN people pop off at the mouth stupidly regarding subjects on which they have very limited knowledge.

More respectful, sure, but face to face if anything emboldens the bullshitter to ply his trade. You've been in a gun store before, I'm assuming?

While the internet has increase the quantity of noise, it's also, imho, vastly improved the signal to noise ratio on many of these more relatively obscure topics. Even in that thread you can see it happening. Unfortunately their format prevents those voices from rising to the top of the din.

You're all lost as there are extremely few virgin red heads and the full moon s seem to be getting more rare too ! Then came along those scam artists in Damascus. No one made blades there .All were made elsewhere , many from India. They made great blades not even knowing their magic ingredient was vanadium .
So now you're complaining that there are scam artists now ??? :p

And this is why Abraham Lincoln said you can't believe everything you read on the Internet. Just today while looking on YouTube for video info of cryo treating I came across a rediculois video. The guy had a tank of liquid nitrogen, several Gillette razors, and some cheap steak knives. He soaked them all in the nitrogen for 24 hours, tempered them in an oven, and claimed that the treatment was so good that the blades would hold an edge forever and never ever need to be sharpened. He also went into information about how the blades would be unbreakable and that they would also be more resistant to heat and cold, ie not heat up when grinding or cutting hot things, and not get as cold in the winter. Blew my mind.

Someone needs to do a knife one.

Anyone want to put one of those together? Make a sticky of "Warning signs someone doesnt know what they are talking about"

I think the first and biggest one is absolutes.

People say "A2 is better than O1"

Well, at what? At what heat treat? For edge retention? Highest possible edge? easy of heat treat?

I think as a general warning sign, if someone is speaking in absolutes they dont what what in the hell they are doing.

You often can tell a fake knife expert when they tell you the thousands of dollars they make selling knives and tell you all the experience they have and usually have a huge amount of posts.

What they usually do is not show you all these knives, you can not find much of anything on line or on the forums or knife annuals and magazines and their blades never seem to show up in the secondary market.

Good rule of thumb for knife forums, if you do not recognize their makers mark or see examples of the work they have done. Usually they are a fake forum expert and often get really pissy if you correct them when they are wrong.

I go on reddit for some other interests, like shows and history and BJJ, but I stopped following r/knives and r/knifeclub.

I hate to sound snobby, but I think it had
Has a much higher percentage of people who are not knowledgeable and just follow trends.
