I have been thinking of making a few knives for myself, family and friends for the past year. Never done anything close to making a knife, just making stuff out of wood. Did some welding about 18 yrs ago in Jr High and thats about it. Ive been looking at courses in my local community college, and they have these courses.
- INTRODUCTION TO METALLURGY FOR MANUFACTURING AND PRECISION MANUFACTURING
- Beginning, Intermediate, Advance 1 + 2 Machining

Would you guy (pros) think those are good or would the stickey at the top of this forum suffice with the direction of someone with experience?

Thanks.

TAKE THE CLASSES, TAKE THE CLASSES!, then when you not doing homework, READ THE STICKIES, READ THE STICKIES! :D

With all the knifemakers in south Texas, I wouldn't be surprised if there was one in your locale who would be willing to have you in his shop. That would give you an idea what the process is about.
I'd recommend you either get a copy of Knives Annual 2009 and consult the directory in the back (by state/city) or get in touch with the TKCA. Contact makers in your area. Many enjoy teaching people. Take donuts. :)
Coursework will certainly teach you valuable skills, but those won't teach you specifically how to make knives.
