Want a Good Frame Lock

The title says it all. I'm in the market for a new folder, and I thought I'd get a frame lock. Some criteria...

1. I have $100 to spend. This is my price limit.
2. No assisted openers; I have loads of them already.
3. I have all of the Boker / CLB designs.
4. I'd like the knife to be office-apropriate, so anything that looks like a tactical-black ninja weapon is out.
5. I also plan on using it, so while I want it to look nice, it shouldn't look so nice that I fear using it (don't wanna mess it up).
6. Blade length no longer than 3".
7. No skeletonized handles.

The CRKT Full Throttle looks nice, but I don't like blade coatings. A Kershaw OD-1 would be ideal, but they're not out yet. I'd like to buy an American-made knife if possible, but I have no problem with Taiwan-made goods.

Suggestions?

Benchmade 635 Mini-Skirmish,Spyderco Volpe or it's little brother the Spyfox?

I'm sure Kershaw makes what you're looking for.Checkout their products.

Good luck:)

BM mini-Skirmish. I think you could find one under $100....maybe. A fine, simple, classy-looking, titanium scaled, smooth action frame lock.

I have many, many Kershaws. I like everything about the Groove except for... the grooves in the blade. They're such a turn-off that it's keeping me from buying the knife; if only it were made without those "striations" as Kershaw calls them.

I already have a Mini Skirmish, and I'm looking for something I don't already own.

The Junkyard Dog I looks nice, but the clip looks ridiculous and I don't want the Air Force markings. Decisions, decisions...

keep the ideas coming please.

I must echo what JTR and SPX mentioned. I was so impressed with the Volpe, that I bought two. An ideal dress knife IMO.

Kershaw make a number of models that you may like. I know that it is an AO design, but you may want to revisit the Leek model, as it seems to fit most of your criteria.

I have every version of the Leek :p I'm browsing on-line now and seeing what's available that I don't have and still meets my criteria.

JN, I was apprehensive when I ordered my first Groove. I had the same thoughts you have now. Once here, and actually seeing the knife in my hand, all that went away. The knife is classy enough for office duty, yet extremely tough, and not a sheeple shocker at all. It is a user, and a good one at that.

I was browsing the Buck knives site today, and I noticed this little knife that may fit your budget: http://www.buckknives.com/index.cfm?event=product.detail&productid=3122

It's nice looking, frame lock, cheapo steel, but what the heck it's $20. If you don't mind giving it a rub down with some ceramic once or twice a week it should do fine for string, paper, nails. Nothing too heavy (carpet, drywall, leather). It's good for the price, IMO.

Josh K: I have a Buck colleague, as well as a Nobleman; they were birthday gifts. Neither sees much use though. I'm leaning towards the Groove with grey G-10 handles or the JYD I. I can always remove the Air Force markings.

No problem. I just thought it was cool how I noticed that (I'm going to have to pick one up and play with it a bit) and you were asking about one. Have fun with the Groove.

Buck Mayo NorthShore

Kershaw Shallot, which is actually a steel for such a nice folder, JunkYardDog I, Kershaw Groove, another great bargain for the money, Kershaw Leek, or Storm I or II are all viable tools and well made frame locks.

How about a Kershaw FrameLock Scallion if you dont already have one. I think that meets your size that you want. Good Luck! Kevin :D

I feel embarassed... I already have every version of the Leek, Scallion, and Shallot except for the 110V Shallot. I don't buy Chives as they're too small for my hands. I own both versions of the Storm. I have an LFK and a Mayo Northshore. I have a Camillus EDC and the Colleage / Nobleman from Buck. I'm running out of ideas (I hope you guys aren't... yet).

I think my best bet is to buy the JYDI and remove the Air Force markings and Dremel the pocket clip down a bit.

I should've mentioned this before... I'm looking for a flipper or stud-equipped blade; no thumb holes or slots please.

Check out the CRKT Pazoda Line. Very sheeple friendly. Good enough size to be usable. I took one this summer backpacking out west as my "cheap knife." Came home and it became a constant companion. I carry another knife with it, but it really fits the bill for most tasks.

This one's EEEEEEZZZ

Nakamura dude, yeah yeah, I know, it's just a liner lock...but you'll love it.

Ditto on the JYD. Retired Air Force so I love the markings, but your mileage, etc. The clip is so-so looking but works great. Beyond those debatable esthetical items, the JYD is one super framelock knife. Great blade. The flipper works. Period. Very thin. Solid, well built knife. I've been EDCing the JYD now for a few months and really like it.

The Groove is a bit bigger than your spec calls for at 3.5" blade.

The full throttle is a nice framelock. Very well done, but has studs, no flipper. It often sells for less in the assisted version, but just take out the spring. Go figure. I have EDCed it and it is a very cool knife.
